If the update has finished downloading and appears in iPhone Storage, you can remove the stored update there. To prevent later automatic downloads, turn off Automatically Download in Software Update settings.
First, check whether the update is downloading or already downloaded
These are different situations. During a download, the iPhone fetches the update files; once downloaded, the update may appear as a removable item in iPhone Storage. Installing is a separate step. Apple says you can continue using your device while an update downloads and that it will notify you when the update is ready to install (Apple’s update guidance).

Apple’s public instructions reviewed here do not establish a universal control for pausing or canceling every active download. The deletion steps below apply when an update is listed in storage; they should not be treated as a guaranteed way to interrupt a live network transfer.
How to delete an iOS update that has downloaded
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then iPhone Storage.
- Find and tap the iOS update in the list.
- Tap Delete Update and confirm if prompted.
Apple documents this route as troubleshooting guidance for an update that will not install or needs to be downloaded again (Apple’s update troubleshooting steps). If the update is still transferring and is not listed in iPhone Storage, these steps may not be available yet.

How to prevent future automatic downloads
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap Automatic Updates.
- Turn off Automatically Download.
Apple separates automatic downloading from automatic installation. If Automatically Install is on, turning it off can reveal the separate download control. Disabling automatic downloading prevents future automatic downloads; it is not documented as an immediate pause for a transfer already in progress (Apple’s iPhone update guide).
How to avoid automatic installation without removing the download
If you are willing to let the update download but do not want it installed automatically, turn off Automatically Install under Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. This controls installation, not whether an update is downloaded. To remove a downloaded update, use the iPhone Storage steps above.

If the update is stuck or will not install
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance suggests trying another network or updating with a Mac or iTunes when an update is failing. These are troubleshooting alternatives, not documented methods for canceling an active download (Apple’s troubleshooting article).
Settings labels and availability can vary by iOS release, region, or device management. Follow the controls shown on your iPhone. Apple’s current support material refers to iOS 27, but the update offered depends on the device, region, and release state; the title does not mean iOS 27 is available to every iPhone. Apple recommends keeping software current for security, features, and fixes, so deferring an update is a timing choice rather than a risk-free permanent solution.
