How you stop an installation in Windows 11 depends on whether it is Windows Update, a Store app, a desktop installer, an MSI package, or a WinGet command. Use the installer’s own Cancel control when available; stopping a process is not the same as undoing its changes. Do not force the PC off during the restart-based part of a Windows upgrade.
Identify the installation type first

Stop a Windows Update that is downloading or installing
If Windows Update is still running in the desktop, pause it:
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Pause updates.
- Choose a pause length or select Pick a date.
Microsoft says pausing cancels updates already in progress. Windows 11 allows a pause of up to 35 days, according to Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance. Pausing is temporary, not a permanent way to disable updates.
To resume, open Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Resume updates. Windows will check for, download, and install available updates.

When pausing is too late
If Windows Update says Restart required or Pending restart, pausing does not roll back changes already committed. To try to remove an installed update, open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, select the update, and choose Uninstall. Microsoft warns that not all updates can be removed.
Stop a Windows 11 feature upgrade
Windows Update can show Download and install, followed by Accept and install in the Software License Terms window. Microsoft’s documented upgrade process does not provide a general cancel command for an upgrade already underway. Before accepting, do not proceed if you do not want to start the upgrade.
Once the device reaches Restart required and you select Restart now, Windows continues the upgrade through restarts and may restart several more times. The normal desktop cancellation interface is no longer available in this phase. Keep the device connected to power and allow the documented process to finish; do not routinely power it off or force a restart.
Stop a Microsoft Store app or game installation
In Windows 11, the Store’s current navigation uses Library, not the older Windows 10 Downloads and updates path.

- Select Library.
- Select Get updates to update the Store and its apps.
Microsoft’s current Store troubleshooting guidance does not document a universal Cancel command for an individual download already in progress. If the Store is stuck, close and reopen it, install available Windows updates, and try the Library again.
Repair or reset a stuck Store app
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the app, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not solve the problem, select Reset.
Reset may remove local app data and settings. These controls are not available for every desktop program. Store apps and conventional desktop programs are handled differently.

Stop a traditional .exe installer
Windows 11 has no general command or Settings page that cleanly cancels every .exe installer. First use the setup program’s own Cancel, Stop, or equivalent button. This gives the installer a chance to clean up work it manages.
If the installer is frozen and has no usable cancel control, terminating its process is an emergency stop, not a rollback.

Find and terminate the installer
- Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Run tasklist to find the installer’s image name or process ID.
- Verify which process belongs to the setup program.
- To terminate by process ID, run taskkill /pid <processID>.
To force termination and include child processes, run taskkill /f /pid <processID> /t. To terminate by executable name, run taskkill /im <imagename.exe>. Microsoft documents these options in its taskkill command reference.
Do not guess a process name if several installers are open. After stopping the installer, restart Windows and check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for a partial installation. Use Uninstall, Repair, or Reset where available.
Stop a Windows Installer (.msi) package
MSI packages run through msiexec.exe. If the installer window is visible, use its Cancel button if the package provides one. The available interface depends on how the package was launched.
For reference, msiexec.exe /i “C:\path\package.msi” starts an installation; /passive shows only a progress bar; /qb provides basic interface; and /quiet or /qn provides no interface. A package launched without an interface cannot show a visible Cancel button. Microsoft also documents UI combinations such as qb+! and qb!+ that hide the Cancel button. Do not run msiexec.exe /x “C:\path\package.msi” to cancel an active installation. The /x option uninstalls a package; it is not a cancellation switch. Likewise, /norestart only prevents a restart after installation completes.
If an MSI is unresponsive and you terminate its process, treat the result as an interrupted installation. Restart Windows and check whether the program appears under Settings > Apps > Installed apps before attempting another install or uninstall.
Stop a WinGet installation
Microsoft’s WinGet documentation does not define a dedicated winget cancel command. If a command is running in Windows Terminal, press Ctrl+C first. If needed, close Terminal or terminate the process from another elevated Terminal window with taskkill /pid <processID> /t. To force-stop by image name, use taskkill /f /im winget.exe.
These commands terminate the process; they do not undo files copied or changes made before termination. Restart Windows and check Settings > Apps > Installed apps. If the program is present, use its normal uninstall option before trying again. WinGet is delivered as part of Microsoft’s App Installer. If it is unavailable after a first sign-in, App Installer registration may still be completing. Microsoft documents this PowerShell command to register it: Add-AppxPackage -RegisterByFamilyName -MainPackage Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller_8wekyb3d8bbwe. - Restart Windows: select Start > Power > Restart. Microsoft lists restarting as a first troubleshooting step for desktop apps that cannot be installed, updated, or removed.
- Check Installed apps: open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. If the program is listed and you no longer want it, select Uninstall.
- Try Repair, then Reset: for apps that expose these options, open Advanced options and select Repair. Use Reset only if needed because it can remove local app data.
- Check for a partial install before retrying: repeatedly launching the installer can make a damaged installation harder to diagnose.
For wider Windows problems, Windows 11 may offer Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This repairs the current Windows version; it does not cancel an application installer. Microsoft says it requires Windows 11 with the 2022 annual update and the February 2024 optional update or later, and may be unavailable on managed work or school devices. Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter instructions on its support page apply to Windows 10, not Windows 11. For Windows 11, start with a restart, the Installed apps repair/reset controls, or the Settings-based uninstall path.

FAQ
Can I permanently stop Windows 11 updates?
No supported permanent Stop updates switch is provided in Windows 11. You can pause updates for up to 35 days. Microsoft says that after the pause expires, updates must be installed before updates can be paused again.
Does Pause updates undo an update that has already installed?
No. Pausing cancels updates in progress, but it does not roll back changes already committed. To try to remove an installed update, use Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.
Can I stop a Windows 11 upgrade after the computer restarts?
Microsoft does not document a general cancellation procedure after the upgrade enters its restart-based installation phase. Do not power off the computer as a routine method; allow the upgrade to complete.
Is taskkill a safe way to cancel any installer?
It only terminates a process. It does not provide a transaction-aware rollback and may leave partial changes. Use the installer’s Cancel control first, then restart and inspect Installed apps.
Can I use msiexec /x to cancel an MSI installation?
No. The /x option uninstalls an MSI package. It is not the documented command for canceling an installation that is currently running.
Where are Microsoft Store downloads in Windows 11?
Open Start > Microsoft Store > Library. Select Get updates to update the Store and its apps. The older Downloads and updates path belongs to Windows 10 instructions.
