To stop an AI assistant from using sensitive information in future chats, turn off its memory or personalization feature, remove any saved memory and the chat or file where the information came from, and check activity and model-training controls separately. These controls do different things, and none guarantees immediate erasure from every provider system or connected service. The safest approach is not to enter information you would not want retained or reviewed.
What “remembering” means—and which control to use
AI assistants can retain or use information in several distinct ways. A setting that stops one kind of use may leave other copies or records in place.
- Memory or personalization lets information from earlier chats influence later responses. Turn this off to prevent future personalization through that feature, and separately remove any saved details already present.
- Chat history or activity keeps conversations available in an account or activity log. Deleting a conversation is different from turning memory off.
- Model improvement controls whether eligible content may be used to improve models. Turning it off is not a deletion command.
- Files and connected apps can hold other copies of information. An uploaded file, integration, or third-party action may have controls or retention rules separate from the assistant’s chat settings.
Work and school accounts may have different controls, retention rules, or administrator restrictions from personal accounts. Check the instructions for the exact service and account you use.
ChatGPT: remove saved information and limit future use
Delete a saved memory and its sources
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Review the memory summary and saved memories, then delete the sensitive item. OpenAI cautions that the summary may omit details.
- If you do not want future memory-based personalization, turn Memory off as well.
- Delete the chat where you first shared the information. Also check regular and archived chats, files in Library, and connected apps for other copies. Deleting a chat alone does not delete a separate saved memory; a Library file can remain after its chat is deleted.
OpenAI says deletion and memory updates can take time to propagate, and that logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT guidance explains the distinction between saved memories and chat sources.

Use Temporary Chat for a sensitive conversation
Start a Temporary Chat and choose Unpersonalized before typing if you do not want existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins used. Temporary Chats do not create or update memories and are not used to improve models. They stay out of chat history unless saved. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Saving a Temporary Chat converts it into a regular conversation subject to the account’s normal settings. In rare high-risk situations, limited safety-relevant context may still be available, and a GPT action can send information to a third party governed by that recipient’s privacy policy. Turn off model improvement and delete chats separately
For personal-account chats, go to Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone and turn it off to stop new chats being used to improve OpenAI models. This does not turn off memory, hide saved chats, or delete them. OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ covers this setting.

To remove a saved chat, delete it separately. OpenAI says it disappears from account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, except if it was already de-identified and disassociated from the account or longer retention is required for security or legal obligations. Google Gemini: manage past-chat personalization and activity
Turn off Memory and remove source chats
For a personal account where the feature is available, open Settings & help > Personal Intelligence and turn Memory off to stop personalization from past Gemini chats. Google’s cited help page says the feature is not available for work, school, or supervised accounts. Delete the relevant chat or chats from Gemini Apps Activity or Recent chats to remove information learned from them; Google says it may take a short time for Gemini to stop using a deleted chat for personalization.

If the information came from a connected Google app, delete the relevant chat and disconnect that app. Doing only one may leave the information available through the other source, and updates to connected-app data can take days to affect Gemini. Details are in Google’s guide to personalization with memory of past Gemini chats.
Turn off Keep Activity and understand its limits
Turn off Keep Activity to stop future activity from being saved in Gemini Apps Activity. Google says conversations may still be saved with the account for up to 72 hours to operate the service and process feedback, even when Keep Activity is off. Certain Gems may also continue to be saved. See Google’s activity-management guidance.

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says the default Gemini Apps Activity auto-delete period is 18 months, with options of 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite. Chats reviewed by human reviewers and related information are not deleted when a user deletes activity; Google says they are retained for up to three years. Other service, legal, or security exceptions may apply. Temporary Chat is available for conversations you do not want used for personalization from past chats; consult the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub for its current terms. These are Google-stated policy periods, not a guarantee that every account’s data follows an identical path.

Anthropic’s cited retention guidance covers consumer Claude products; it does not establish memory-setting steps for every Claude plan. Users can delete conversations: Anthropic says deletion removes them from chat history immediately and from back-end storage within 30 days.

Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled. Turning Model Improvement off prevents previous or new chats from being used in future training, but does not remove content from training runs already underway or models already trained. Anthropic says de-identified consumer chat data in training pipelines may be retained for up to five years when a user allows use to improve Claude; that period applies to new or resumed chats after the setting is enabled. Copilot and other assistants: don’t assume settings match
Memory, deletion, and retention controls vary by provider, product, account type, and workspace. The available official information here does not establish current Microsoft Copilot steps or a reliable comparison between consumer and organizational accounts. Do not apply ChatGPT or Gemini instructions to Copilot; consult current Microsoft documentation for the specific Copilot product and account.

- Before sending: avoid entering information you would not want retained or reviewed. If you proceed, check what the assistant’s temporary or incognito mode actually prevents.
- After sharing: locate and delete saved memories, the source chat, related files, and any connected-app copies.
- Check memory, chat/activity, and model-improvement settings individually; switching off one does not switch off the others.
- Read the provider’s retention terms for your account and workspace. Deletion from the visible interface may not mean immediate removal from provider systems, reviewer records, backups, or third-party services.
