If your PS5 makes noise when a disc spins, first check the disc and confirm the sound is not coming from the cooling fan. Clean the disc and test another supported disc. PlayStation does not provide a noise-specific drive repair; if the mechanical noise persists, contact PlayStation Repairs rather than opening or lubricating the console.
First, work out when the noise happens
Listen for when the sound starts and where it seems to come from. A sound that occurs while a disc spins, loads, or ejects may be disc-related; louder airflow during a demanding game or application may be fan noise. These observations can help narrow the issue, but they cannot confirm the source remotely.
- Note whether the sound starts only when a disc is inserted or continues when no disc is in use.
- Check whether the console reads and ejects the disc normally.
- If possible, observe whether another supported disc produces the same sound.
PlayStation says the cooling fan may run louder than usual during some games and applications. Its ventilation advice addresses cooling, not disc-drive repair: leave at least 10 cm of open space around each side of the console, keep vents clear, and avoid cramped spaces or long-fiber carpet. To clear dust near the vents, disconnect the AC cable and use a low-powered vacuum. See PlayStation’s fan and ventilation guidance.
Check the disc and how it is inserted
Before assuming the drive is faulty, verify that the media is supported and inserted in the correct orientation. On a vertical PS5 placed on its stand, the disc label should face left as you insert it. PS5 consoles do not play burned discs or audio CDs. Clean the disc safely
If the disc is dirty or scratched, use a clean, lint-free cloth made for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs. Wipe from the center toward the edge. Avoid solvents and chemicals. Cleaning may address a disc-surface problem, but it is not an established fix for noisy drive mechanics.
Try another supported disc
After checking the disc and its orientation, test another supported game, Blu-ray, or DVD. If one disc causes the problem while another works normally, the first disc may be the issue. If the noise occurs with multiple discs or the console has reading problems, use PlayStation’s troubleshooting page and seek repair support if the issue remains.

If a disc is stuck, use manual eject—not force
A stuck disc is a separate problem from a noisy drive. Do not pull the disc forcibly. PlayStation’s manual-eject instructions require shutting down the console, disconnecting its cables, and using a #1 Phillips (cross-hatch) screwdriver. Follow the instructions for your console model, and do not turn on or play the PS5 with its cover off.

If the disc is correctly inserted and clean, another supported disc produces the same abnormal mechanical noise, or the console has persistent reading or ejection trouble, stop troubleshooting and contact PlayStation Repairs. PlayStation does not publish a noise threshold or a noise-specific repair procedure, so there is no official test that identifies a faulty drive based on sound alone.

Do not open the console to adjust or lubricate the drive based on noise alone. A separately sold add-on disc drive is not a documented noise remedy. It is compatible with CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups; PlayStation’s UK media guidance says the CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc media, while the add-on drive can be used with CFI-2000 Digital Edition and CFI-7000 consoles. Check your model before considering that accessory: PlayStation add-on drive compatibility and UK disc-drive guidance.
