If your Dyson Supersonic Nural gets hot and shuts off, switch it off, unplug it and let it cool for at least one hour. Dyson says overheating usually means the filter needs cleaning. Clean the filter cage and mesh gently while dry; if all three red lights keep flashing, do not turn the dryer back on—contact Dyson.
Why does my Dyson Supersonic Nural keep shutting off?
A filter clogged with dust, hair or styling-product residue is the first thing to check. Dyson says overheating usually occurs because the filter needs cleaning, and recommends cleaning it monthly or when the three white LEDs flash continuously. See Dyson’s Supersonic Nural troubleshooting guide.
Not every brief interruption means the dryer is overheating. Dyson describes Pause detect as an intended feature: when you put the dryer down, it cuts heat and minimizes airflow. Pause detect is always on unless a diffuser attachment is connected. If the dryer was set down, that behavior may explain a short change in operation; persistent red warning lights are a different situation.
Why does my Dyson Supersonic Nural overheat?
Dyson identifies a filter that needs cleaning as the usual cause. A blocked filter can restrict airflow, so start with the filter rather than assuming the dryer needs replacing. The manual lists a maximum operating temperature of 105°C in normal working conditions and a maximum thermistor temperature of 145°C at safety shutdown. These are technical specifications—not a normal target temperature or an adjustable setting.

Dyson’s general Supersonic FAQ also associates blocked filters with cutouts, intermittent operation and a burning smell, but that is general Supersonic guidance, not a Nural-specific diagnosis. Follow the Nural instructions below; do not infer a failure rate or cause beyond what Dyson establishes.
How do I clean the Nural filter?
- Switch off, unplug and cool the dryer. If it has overheated, leave it unplugged for at least one hour. Do not handle or clean it while hot.
- Check the indicator. Dyson recommends cleaning monthly or when all three white LEDs flash continuously.
- Remove the filter cage. Hold the handle, turn the cage gently counterclockwise, then pull it down and away.
- Clean the cage and mesh. Use a lint-free cloth or soft brush to remove dust, hair and product residue. Do not put water on the filter mesh, and do not press hard.
- Refit the cage. Align it correctly and turn clockwise until it locks. Do not operate the dryer until the cage is secured.
Dyson’s FAQ separately says the removable magnetic filter cage may be washed in warm, soapy water and dried before use. That instruction applies to the cage only—not the filter mesh. Keep the dryer unplugged and cool while cleaning, and ensure the cage is fully dry before refitting it. A suitable soft brush or lint-free cloth is optional; Dyson does not require a particular brand or model.

What do the Nural warning lights mean?

The Dyson Supersonic Nural user manual says, “The LEDs will flash continuously to let you know that your machine needs attention.” It further instructs: “If all three red lights continue to flash, contact the Dyson Helpline. Don’t turn back on.” The manual’s displayed version and date metadata are incomplete.

If the dryer continues to cut out after the filter is clean and correctly refitted, use Dyson’s Nural troubleshooting flow or contact Dyson customer service. Persistent flashing red lights require stopping use and contacting Dyson rather than testing the dryer again.
