Start by finding out why your dog is waking you. They may need to go outside, feel uncomfortable or anxious, be hungry or thirsty, or have learned that waking you brings attention or breakfast. Meet genuine needs first; then make the bedtime routine and your response consistent.
Why does my dog wake me up?
Look for a pattern before changing how you respond. Note what time your dog wakes, whether they whine, bark, paw at you, pace, or ask to go out, and what happens after you get up. Also consider recent changes to the household, schedule, sleeping location, or your dog’s behavior.
Possible causes include needing to relieve themselves, boredom, hunger, thirst, fear, excitement, or a desire for attention. The American Kennel Club (AKC) discusses these possibilities in its guide to why dogs wake their owners. The timing and signals can offer clues, but waking alone does not establish the cause.
Meet immediate needs before treating waking as a habit
If your dog may need the toilet, calmly give them an opportunity to go outside. Keep the trip quiet and focused rather than turning it into playtime. Check that your dog has access to water and a comfortable sleeping space, and do not punish barking, whining, or other signs of distress.

A necessary bathroom break is different from a non-urgent request for attention. The AKC advises answering a wake-up when a dog needs to relieve themselves; a thorough final toilet trip before bed may help some dogs. If your dog seems unwell or unusually distressed, address that rather than trying to train the waking away.
When should you contact a veterinarian?
Arrange a veterinary assessment if the waking is new, confusing, persistent, or accompanied by other changes. The AKC specifically recommends a check for new or puzzling behavior and names urinary infection and cognitive dysfunction as examples a veterinarian may need to rule out. Those are possibilities to assess, not diagnoses that can be made from nighttime waking alone.

Build a routine that makes settling easier
Provide suitable activity and enrichment during the day
Make room for physical activity and mental engagement appropriate to your dog. A puzzle toy can be one optional way to provide enrichment; it is not a treatment for discomfort, fear, or a toileting need. Choose activities that suit your dog and can be used safely.
Make the last toilet trip unrushed
Give your dog time to relieve themselves before bed rather than making the final trip a hurried step on the way indoors. If they still wake to go out, respond to that need instead of assuming the routine has solved it.

Choose a quiet, comfortable sleeping place
Set up a resting area away from avoidable nighttime disturbances, with a comfortable bed or other suitable arrangement. VCA’s general guidance on dogs and sleep supports providing quiet, comfortable rest and not disturbing sleeping dogs; it does not explain every cause of waking.
A crate is an option only if it is a safe, comfortable space your dog has been introduced to positively. It is not necessary or suitable for every dog.

Respond consistently once urgent needs are met
If your dog is healthy, comfortable, and does not need the toilet, consider whether waking has reliably led to food, play, attention, or your presence. The AKC and VCA both describe how a response that gives a dog what they want can maintain behavior. VCA’s guidance on barking notes that even approaching a barking dog can inadvertently reinforce it.
Once you have ruled out a real need or distress, avoid making barking or pawing a dependable route to breakfast, play, or extended attention. Instead, reinforce calm settling as part of the routine. Do not use this approach to ignore a dog who may need to toilet, seems unwell, or is distressed.

Choose optional supports for the cause they address
