You can stay connected abroad without eSIM by using your carrier’s roaming service, a local physical SIM, Wi-Fi, or a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. The best fit depends on your destination, whether your phone is unlocked and network-compatible, how much data you need, and whether you must receive ordinary calls or texts.
Choose the connection that fits your trip
Compare the options by total cost, destination coverage, setup, device compatibility, data limits, and whether you need a working phone number or just internet access. Check the terms for your exact destination and travel dates: roaming prices, local SIM rules, and coverage vary by carrier and country.
| Option | Setup and convenience | What to verify | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home-carrier roaming | Minimal setup; keeps your existing line | Destination coverage, fees or passes, data limits, and roaming settings | You value convenience and your carrier offers suitable terms |
| Local physical SIM | Requires a SIM slot, an unlocked phone, and activation | Network compatibility, coverage, registration, plan validity, and top-ups | Your phone is unlocked and a local prepaid plan suits your needs |
| Wi-Fi and apps | No cellular plan needed where Wi-Fi is available | Wi-Fi availability, app features, Wi-Fi calling rules, and security | You have light data needs or can connect at predictable stops |
| Portable Wi-Fi hotspot | Separate device and service; can share a connection | SIM or service type, bands, carrier acceptance, APN, coverage, battery, and total cost | Several devices need access or your phone cannot take a local SIM |
Use your current carrier’s roaming service
Roaming is often the simplest option because you keep your existing SIM and number. Whether it is available or affordable depends on your home carrier, destination, and plan. The U.S. Department of State advises travelers to contact their carrier to confirm whether their phone will work abroad and to ask about international options; many U.S. plans do not include international service by default.
Before departure, ask your carrier which countries are covered, whether charges are per day or trip, what data allowance or cap applies, and how calls and texts are billed. Confirm how to turn roaming on or off and how to avoid unwanted data use. Carrier names, pricing, and device menus differ, so rely on the terms for your own plan.

Get a local physical SIM
A destination SIM can provide local mobile service, but your phone needs a physical SIM slot and must be unlocked to use another carrier. A SIM that fits is not necessarily compatible: check the phone’s supported network bands and technology against the destination carrier’s network.
Before buying, check the carrier’s coverage where you will travel, the plan’s data and voice/text inclusions, validity period, activation and top-up rules, and any ID registration requirements. Visitor SIM availability and purchase locations vary by country. The State Department recommends researching local SIM requirements, while Government of Canada travel guidance explains that a phone must be unlocked to change SIM providers.

Rely on Wi-Fi and messaging apps
Wi-Fi at your accommodation, cafés, airports, or other stops can provide internet access without cellular data roaming. Messaging and calling apps may work over Wi-Fi, but their features differ; calls to ordinary phone numbers and a carrier’s Wi-Fi calling service may have separate requirements.
Wi-Fi-only access does not provide a continuous connection between locations. Before relying on it, check how you will receive essential account codes or two-factor authentication if your home line is unavailable. Download offline maps and travel information, save important numbers, and use care on public Wi-Fi. The State Department’s communication-abroad guidance and Canadian travel guidance recommend preparing for connectivity needs before leaving.

Carry a portable Wi-Fi hotspot
A portable hotspot creates a Wi-Fi network your phone can join, so the phone itself does not need eSIM support. It can also connect multiple devices. Government of Canada travel guidance describes a MiFi device as able to create a personal hotspot for up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices; that is a category description, not a guarantee for every model. Hong Kong’s Communications Authority also lists portable routers as a travel data option.
If the hotspot takes a physical SIM, check its SIM size and supported bands against the destination carrier, and confirm the carrier permits that device on its plan. Some devices need manual APN setup; NETGEAR’s hotspot support guidance notes that APN settings may need to be configured. Other hotspots use provider-specific or embedded connectivity instead of a replaceable SIM, so verify the exact model and service terms.

A hotspot can be useful when several travelers or devices need one connection, or when your phone is locked and cannot accept a local SIM. It adds another device to carry and charge, and its connection still depends on service coverage and plan limits. Compare the complete cost—including device or rental, shipping, data, any deposit, and return costs—rather than assuming renting or buying is cheaper.

- Find your phone’s exact model, check whether it has a physical SIM slot, confirm whether it is carrier-unlocked, and identify its supported network bands.
- Ask your home carrier to confirm service in each destination, roaming prices, included countries, pass details, data limits, and how to prevent unwanted data use.
- If considering a local SIM or SIM-based hotspot, verify destination coverage, device compatibility, registration rules, plan validity, and top-up terms.
- Download offline maps and essential travel information, save emergency contacts, and learn the local emergency number.
- If relying on Wi-Fi, confirm how messaging, internet calls, and required account authentication will work, and use caution on public networks.
To limit cellular use, airplane mode can turn off voice, text, and data service; Wi-Fi can then be manually re-enabled. Exact settings and billing effects vary by device and carrier. See the Government of Canada telecommunications guidance and your carrier’s instructions before relying on a particular setting.
