Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with a small, sunny plot near a water source, test the soil before buying amendments, and grow vegetables your household will eat—especially ones that cost more to buy. Use compost to improve soil, but reserve purchased fertilizer for nutrient needs shown by the test, crop requirements, or label guidance. Check local soil-testing options and planting dates: both vary by location.
Start small and choose crops you want to eat
A garden does not need to be large to be useful. University of Maryland Extension recommends a starter plot of 50–75 square feet. Begin with a few crops, then expand after you learn what grows well in your conditions.
Consider both what your household likes and what is relatively expensive to buy. Easy options listed by Maryland Extension include bush beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, summer squash, and other leafy greens. The garden’s eventual savings depend on local prices, harvest, season length, and growing conditions, so treat costlier-to-buy crops as candidates rather than guaranteed savings.
Choose a sunny, convenient site
Look for level ground with good drainage, convenient access, and water nearby. Maryland Extension recommends at least six hours of full sun, preferably more. University of New Hampshire Extension says most vegetables do best with over eight hours of direct sun. These are compatible guides: six hours is a practical minimum in Maryland’s recommendation, while more sun generally suits more vegetables.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the site gets less sun, consider shade-tolerant choices such as lettuce, spinach, and some herbs rather than assuming every vegetable will thrive there.
Choose between in-ground and raised beds
| Format | Starting expense | When it fits | Soil needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-ground | Usually less expensive when existing soil is suitable (UNH Extension) | Use when the site drains well and its soil is appropriate for growing food. | Test the existing soil; you may not need to buy replacement soil. |
| Raised bed | Greater upfront labor and expense (UNH Extension) | Consider when the existing ground is unsuitable or a contained growing area is useful. | Typically requires filling the bed with growing medium; assess cost before building. |
Test the soil before buying fertilizer or other amendments
A soil test can show pH and nutrient levels, helping you avoid buying nutrients the garden does not need. Find a local Cooperative Extension or other regional soil-testing service and follow its instructions for collecting and submitting a sample. Fees, available tests, and recommendations vary by location.

Also consider possible contamination, especially in soil near older homes or sites with a history that raises concern. UNH Extension flags older-home soils as a possible lead concern. Maryland Extension’s garden-preparation guidance refers to a lead level below 400 ppm; that figure is specific to its guidance and should not be treated as a universal food-safety threshold. Ask the local testing service which safety tests are appropriate and follow applicable local advice.
Improve soil with compost, without assuming it replaces fertilizer
Compost adds organic matter and can improve soil structure. For bare ground without grass to remove, Maryland Extension recommends adding at least 2 inches of compost and digging it in; it also suggests adding a thin layer at planting. If grass covers the site, its method is to cover the grass with cardboard or newspaper and add a 2–4 inch compost layer.

Compost and fertilizer have related but different jobs. Compost improves organic matter, while fertilizer supplies specified nutrients. Soil organic matter may not provide enough nutrients at every time or crop stage—for example, early spring or fruit formation—so use test results and crop needs to decide whether additional nutrients are warranted. A backyard compost pile or bin can provide an ongoing source of organic matter if you have room and suitable inputs; an existing municipal compost or leaf program may be another option.
Use well-composted manure on vegetable beds. UNH Extension recommends composted manure for garden crops; its alternative for fresh manure is to incorporate it for a cover crop before food crops follow. Do not put fresh manure or pet waste directly on food beds.

Use fertilizer only when the soil and crops call for it
Follow the soil-test recommendation, the fertilizer label, and the needs of the crops you are growing. The N-P-K numbers on a fertilizer label are percentages of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). For example, UNH Extension explains that a 5-5-5 product requires twice as much product as a 10-10-10 product to provide the same amount of nitrogen. A lower analysis is not automatically a better bargain: compare the nutrient amount supplied and follow the recommended application rate rather than applying extra.
Both organic and synthetic fertilizers can supply nutrients; the label and soil-test guidance matter more than assuming one type is always cheaper or complete. UNH Extension advises incorporating fertilizer into the top few inches of soil before planting when the product’s directions call for it. Do not exceed the label rate: more fertilizer is not a substitute for testing or appropriate application.

Check planting dates for your location
Planting calendars and last-frost timing depend on where you garden, and the guidance above is not a local calendar. Find your state or county Cooperative Extension’s vegetable planting calendar and last-frost guidance before sowing or transplanting. Use the dates for your area and the crops you selected rather than relying on a generic national schedule.
