To start a group call in the Google Meet app, tap New → Group call, choose up to 31 contacts, then tap Call or Create and share a link. People eligible for direct Meet calls can be rung; others can join through a link. Google documents the same basic steps for Android and iOS.
How do I make a group call in Google Meet?

Update Google Meet to the latest version available for your device. The new calling experience depends on participants having received the update.

Open Meet and tap New → Group call.

Search for contacts and select the people you want to include. Google Meet Help says you can select up to 31 contacts.

If none of the selected contacts can receive a direct call, choose Create and share a link, then join the call and wait for others to use the link.
These steps are in Google’s current Android and iPhone and iPad instructions. The contact limit is a selection limit, not a guarantee that every selected person can be rung.

How do I invite someone who cannot receive a Meet call?
Meet identifies contacts who cannot be reached with a direct call and provides a link-sharing option. Share that link with the person so they can join. When all the selected contacts are unable to receive a ring, Meet offers the link-first option, Create and share a link, instead of starting with a direct call.
For a mixed group, use Call for eligible contacts; share the link with anyone Meet indicates cannot receive the call. Link joining is the fallback, so selecting a contact does not mean Meet will necessarily ring them.

Why does my call still use legacy calling?
The new calling experience appears when all participants have the latest updated Meet app. Google says users may see an in-app prompt when the change takes effect. If participants have not all received or installed the update, a call may default to legacy calling. Once everyone is using the updated app, legacy calling is no longer accessible. See Google’s transition guide for the current explanation.
Legacy group calls with existing groups are no longer available to start as new legacy group calls. To make a new group call, select the intended contacts through New → Group call, rather than relying on an old saved group call.

Can I add someone to a Google Meet group call after it starts?
No. Google says the new group-calling experience does not support adding or removing people directly from an existing group call, and the saved group entry cannot be edited. Start a new group call and select the participants you want. The same limitation applies if you need to change a saved group. Google’s transition FAQs describe this change.

The main difference for group calls is how you assemble the call: the new flow starts by selecting contacts, while previous calling behavior could use an existing group. Joining also depends on whether each contact can receive a direct ring; a shared link is the alternative. The new call is not an editable group roster once it is underway.

Google lists in-call chat, live captions, screen sharing, stackable effects and on-the-go mode among features of the new calling experience. Family mode, Knock Knock and Mirror mode are among the legacy features Google says are unavailable in the new experience.
