To start a 2.4 GHz wireless gamepad, plug its matching USB receiver into a supported host, set the controller to the required mode if it has a mode switch, then turn it on using the instructions for that exact model. The steps are not standardized: the receiver, host compatibility, button sequence, and connection light can differ by controller.

How to connect a 2.4 GHz controller

  1. Identify the controller and check host compatibility. Find its model name on the controller, packaging, or manual, then confirm that the host is supported. A 2.4 GHz receiver does not mean the controller works with every device. For example, 8BitDo’s Ultimate C Windows instructions specify Windows 10 (1903) or later: 8BitDo Ultimate C Windows setup.
  2. Connect the matching receiver. Plug the controller’s own 2.4 GHz USB receiver into a supported USB port on the host.
  3. Choose the correct mode, if needed. Set any mode switch as directed by the manual. On the 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4g, the PC receiver uses XInput when the switch is set to X and DInput when set to D. Those settings are specific to that controller; do not assume another model uses the same labels or positions. See the 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4g FAQ.
  4. Power on the controller using its documented control. For the Ultimate C Windows procedure, 8BitDo says to hold X and Home. Amkette’s EvoFox Elite X2 instructions instead say to press its EvoFox button after inserting the receiver. Use the sequence in your own model’s manual, not one borrowed from another gamepad: EvoFox Elite X2 support.
  5. Wait for the connection indicator described in the manual. In the cited Ultimate C Windows instructions, the status LED stays solid when Windows recognizes the controller. For the cited EvoFox Elite X2 procedure, the first LED is solid green when the receiver connection succeeds. Neither indicator is universal.
  6. Check the game or host input mode if the controller connects but acts unexpectedly. Make sure the selected mode suits the host and application. Supported controls and features vary by product and setup.

What to check if the gamepad will not connect

No connection light

  • Check that the receiver is fully seated in a USB port supported by the host.
  • Confirm that the controller is powered on and set to the correct mode, if it has a mode switch.
  • Consult the model’s manual for the expected light or connection signal; colors and patterns differ.

The controller powers on, but the host does not recognize it

  • Verify the host’s operating-system or platform requirements for the exact model.
  • Check whether the controller must be set to a particular input mode. The 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4g, for example, uses XInput or DInput on PC according to its switch setting.
  • Do not assume a receiver from another gamepad will work. Use a replacement only if the manufacturer confirms it is compatible with your exact model.

Try wired operation only if the model supports it

A cable can be a useful fallback, but wired support is not guaranteed for every 2.4 GHz controller. The 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4g FAQ describes USB cable use on PC, while the EvoFox Elite X2 support page describes USB-C wired mode. Follow the instructions for the relevant model.

Re-pair the controller and receiver when directed

If the receiver and controller need pairing, use the manufacturer’s procedure for that model. Amkette documents a new-dongle pairing procedure for the EvoFox Elite X2; its button steps should not be applied to other controllers.

Platform-specific details to verify

Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact combination of controller, receiver, host, and mode. For example, 8BitDo’s Ultimate 2.4g FAQ gives a separate procedure for using that controller with Nintendo Switch. In that setup, it says NFC (amiibo), motion control, IR, HD rumble, and wake-up are not supported. These details apply to that product and setup, not to 2.4 GHz controllers generally.
