To stake ETH directly on Ethereum as a solo validator, you need at least 32 ETH, a connected computer running Ethereum execution, consensus, and validator software, and the ability to maintain it securely and reliably. You can instead use a staking service or pool, but those options add provider, custody, smart-contract, fee, or redemption risks. Before choosing a route, check who controls the validator keys and withdrawal credentials: that determines how you can exit and recover your ETH.
Choose how you want to stake
Ethereum’s proof-of-stake network relies on validators to participate in consensus. You can operate a validator yourself or use a service or pool that handles some or all of the operational work. The protocol minimum for activating a solo validator is 32 ETH; a pool may accept less, but that is a separate arrangement rather than a smaller native solo validator deposit.
| Route | ETH threshold and operation | Control and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Home or solo validator | At least 32 ETH; you operate a connected node with execution, consensus, and validator software. | You participate directly and control your keys, while taking responsibility for hardware, security, uptime, updates, and maintenance. |
| Delegated staking or staking as a service | Generally uses a 32 ETH validator deposit, while a service operates the node. | You rely on the provider’s solvency, security, regulatory position, fees, and processes. Find out who controls withdrawal credentials and therefore the exit and recovery route. |
| Pooled or liquid staking | Can allow participation with less than 32 ETH. Some pools use smart contracts and receipt tokens; other products may be offchain or custodial. | Can reduce operational work and may issue a tradable receipt token, but adds risks involving intermediaries, contracts or custody, fees, market liquidity, and redemption terms. |
Compare options by asking who holds signing and withdrawal keys, who runs the hardware, whether a smart contract or custodian is involved, what fees apply, how redemptions work, and what happens if an operator or service fails. Ethereum.org’s pool listings are informational, not endorsements: Liquid & pooled staking.
What you need for a solo validator
- At least 32 ETH: the solo validator activation deposit.
- A dedicated, internet-connected computer: it must run the required node and validator software. The official guides identify the software categories but do not prescribe a universal hardware model or current minimum specification.
- Operational readiness: you must be able to maintain the computer, keep software and configuration in good order, monitor availability, and protect credentials.
- A verified withdrawal destination: check the withdrawal credential type and address before depositing. Treat credential configuration as a critical security decision.
Ethereum.org advises prospective operators: “Solo validators are expected to test their setup and operational skills on the testnet before risking funds.” Read the Home stake your ETH guide and the technical overview of proof of stake before committing funds.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to set up a home validator
- Prepare a dedicated connected computer. Choose hardware based on the current requirements of the clients you plan to run; the official sources do not identify one universal model.
- Install and maintain the client software. A validator setup needs execution, consensus, and validator clients. Follow the current official setup instructions rather than relying on an unverified configuration.
- Practice on a testnet. Confirm that you can configure, operate, update, and monitor the setup before putting ETH at risk.
- Create validator credentials and verify withdrawal details. Confirm the credential type and withdrawal address carefully. The address is where eligible withdrawals are directed, and credential setup may not be reversible.
- Deposit at least 32 ETH to activate the solo validator. Use the current official Launchpad flow and check every transaction and credential detail before confirming.
- Maintain the validator. Keep the computer and clients available, secure keys, monitor performance, and apply client updates carefully.

Understand withdrawal credentials and rewards
Withdrawal credentials determine how validator stake and rewards can be withdrawn and where they go. Ethereum’s withdrawal guidance distinguishes legacy Type 1 credentials from compounding Type 2 credentials.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Type 1: effective balance is capped at 32 ETH. Balance above that amount is periodically swept to the designated withdrawal address.
- Type 2: effective balance can compound up to 2048 ETH. Rewards compound into the validator balance; partial withdrawals below the upper threshold require an execution-layer transaction and gas.
The 2048 ETH maximum effective balance for Type 2 credentials is a protocol parameter stated in ethereum.org’s withdrawals guidance, updated August 17, 2026. Read Staking withdrawals and verify the credential and withdrawal-address control before depositing.

Downtime and operational mistakes
A validator that is offline can miss rewards and incur small ETH losses. Client or configuration mistakes can also disrupt validator duties. Ordinary downtime is not the same as slashing.

Slashing
Provable misbehavior, such as signing conflicting blocks, can result in slashing: part of the stake can be destroyed and the validator can be forced out of the network. Protect signing credentials and avoid running conflicting validator instances with the same keys.
Key and withdrawal-address risk
Protect validator signing credentials and confirm that the withdrawal address is correct and under appropriate control. If a provider holds the withdrawal credentials, you may lack an independent protocol-level recovery route.

Provider, pool, and liquidity risk
Delegated providers can differ in solvency, security, regulatory status, custody arrangements, fees, and processing terms. Pools differ in transparency, smart-contract design, custody, and redemption mechanics; liquid staking tokens can trade or behave differently from the ETH they represent. A full exit or pool redemption is not necessarily immediate: network exit demand, provider procedures, and available liquidity can affect timing.
Ethereum.org explains the additional considerations in its pages on delegated staking and liquid and pooled staking.

How to exit and recover staked ETH
A solo validator must submit a voluntary exit and then wait until it becomes withdrawable and its balance is processed. Network demand affects exit timing. With a pool or provider, its own liquidity and redemption process can add steps or waiting time. Check the relevant terms and make sure you understand who can initiate an exit and control the withdrawal credentials before staking.
For the protocol’s withdrawal process, see Ethereum’s staking withdrawals guide.
