A big discount badge or high star rating is not enough to tell you whether an Amazon offer is worthwhile. Check the exact product and seller, compare the price with its history and other reputable retailers, inspect reviews and terms, then judge the final checkout total. No single badge, chart, seller label, or review pattern proves deception.
1. Confirm what the offer actually includes
Before comparing prices, note the brand, model or manufacturer number, selected size, color or configuration, condition, seller, and delivery terms. Check the variation you have selected: a headline price may apply to a different size or version. Read the full description and condition details, including terms such as “refurbished,” “vintage,” or “close-out,” which can indicate an item is not in perfect condition.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends recording details such as the manufacturer and model number, size, color, and shipping when comparison shopping. An unusually low price for an expensive brand-name product can be a reason to investigate whether it is counterfeit or stolen, but price alone does not establish that. Compare the seller, stated condition, included items, delivery, and return terms; no single seller label establishes authenticity.

2. Check price history, not just the discount percentage
On eligible Amazon product pages, look for a price-history link near the displayed price. Amazon also describes checking price history through Alexa for Shopping; the service was previously called Rufus, and Amazon reported the name change on May 13, 2026. Compare the current offer with the product’s recent price range, then check the same model and condition at reputable retailers. A crossed-out price or percentage discount is a starting point, not proof that the offer is the best available.

Amazon describes 30-, 90-, and 365-day price-history views. It says the feature is available in the U.S., UK, Canada, and India, while 365-day insights are rolling out in the U.S., UK, and India. Availability and display can vary by product page, so check the page and marketplace you are using. These details reflect Amazon’s description checked October 7, 2026. Amazon’s price-history explanation
Amazon distinguishes two reference prices:
- List Price (also called MSRP): Amazon says this is a validated price it can find on Amazon and at other retailers.
- Typical or “Was” Price: Amazon says this is the median price paid on Amazon in the last 90 days, excluding prices paid during a limited-time deal.
Those are Amazon’s definitions, and the measures are not interchangeable. Neither, by itself, establishes that a deal is the best available. Use the history for the exact item and compare like-for-like offers. Amazon’s explanation of reference prices

Amazon said in 2026 that more than 50 million customers had checked its price-history feature since it launched in 2024. That is Amazon’s reported usage figure, not evidence about how often discounts are misleading or how accurately the feature identifies them.
3. Look beyond the star rating
Read a selection of reviews rather than relying on the average. Check whether review dates show an unusual burst, whether reviewers appear to have a history beyond one product, and whether the site identifies an incentive. These are prompts to look more closely, not proof that a review is fake. Compare feedback from other sources when possible.

The FTC cautions that “Don’t assume that, just by looking, you can spot the difference between a real review and a fake one.” It says appearances can mislead in either direction, and incentive labels may not always be clear. FTC guidance on evaluating online reviews

Check the amount available to your account and the total shown before payment. Include the selected item’s price, shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and applicable fees. Read the conditions attached to a deal: it may require a membership, coupon, minimum quantity, or another qualification. A displayed promotion may not be available to every shopper.

The FTC’s U.S. fee-rule FAQ says a promotion unavailable to everyone should not be reflected in the generally available total price before a shopper qualifies. It also says businesses may use dynamic pricing if the pricing information is not misleading. These are guidance points in the context of that U.S. rule, not a complete legal analysis of every product, offer, or country. FTC fee-rule FAQ
