Warning signs to look for before investing
Guaranteed or unusually easy profits
Crypto investments can lose value. Treat claims of quick, easy, or guaranteed returns—or claims that an investment has little or no risk—with skepticism. Celebrity endorsements, testimonials, and screenshots of growing balances do not establish that an offer is genuine. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) discusses these warning signs in its cryptocurrency scam guidance and investment scam guidance.
Urgency, secrecy, or unclear answers
Be wary if someone says you must invest immediately, describes a limited-time opportunity, discourages you from researching, or cannot explain in writing how the investment works and where your money will go. A legitimate-looking site is not proof: scammers can create convincing platforms and fabricate account activity.
Requests to transfer crypto or pay more to withdraw
A stranger asking you to send cryptocurrency to an account they control is a major red flag. So is a platform that shows supposed gains but blocks a withdrawal or demands a fee, tax, or additional deposit to release funds. Crypto transfers are often difficult to reverse. Do not send more money to try to recover funds already sent.

How crypto investment scams often work
An unsolicited message, call, email, social-media contact, or dating-app conversation may lead to an offer of investment coaching or account management. The promoter directs you to buy cryptocurrency and transfer it to a convincing but fake investment platform. The site may display fabricated growth and encourage further deposits; withdrawal attempts can then be blocked or made conditional on extra payments. These patterns are described by the FTC in its consumer guidance on cryptocurrency scams.
Other versions involve a supposed giveaway or celebrity impersonator promising to multiply crypto, or a new online acquaintance offering to teach you to invest. A friend’s compromised account or someone in an online community can also be used to make an offer seem trustworthy. The FTC’s advice is direct: “Never mix online dating and investment advice.”

Check an offer independently before sending money
- Pause and record the details. Write down the promoter’s name, company, cryptocurrency or token, promised returns, platform address, and instructions for sending funds. Do not let a deadline prevent you from checking.
- Search beyond the promoter’s own materials. Search the person, company, and token with terms such as “review,” “scam,” and “complaint.” Read multiple results rather than relying on a single review, testimonial, or website supplied by the promoter.
- Ask for a written explanation. Request clear details about how the investment works, who controls the funds, how returns are generated, and how withdrawals work. If the answers are vague or the promoter evades basic questions, do not proceed.
- Check registration or licensing where applicable. Requirements depend on the investment and relevant law. A registration check is only one part of due diligence: registration does not guarantee a return, and not finding a listing by itself does not prove that a particular offer is fraudulent. The FTC outlines checks in its investment scam guidance.
- Get an independent second opinion. Discuss the proposal with someone you trust who is not connected to the sale. Do not transfer crypto under pressure or to test whether a platform will let you withdraw.
What the FTC’s investment-scam figures do—and do not—show
The FTC reported $4.6 billion in losses to investment scams in 2023. In 2026, it reported more than $7.9 billion in investment-scam losses in 2025, with a median individual loss above $10,000. These figures cover investment scams overall, not crypto scams alone, and refer to different reporting years; they should not be read as crypto-specific loss estimates. Stop communicating with the promoter and do not send additional funds, including a supposed withdrawal or recovery fee. For U.S. readers, the FTC identifies several possible reporting routes. Choose the appropriate channels for the circumstances; these U.S. agencies and routes are not universal reporting instructions for other countries.

- Report the incident to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Consider reporting to the SEC or CFTC when the offer may fall within their areas of responsibility; the FTC’s investment scam guidance links to their complaint resources.
- Report internet-enabled crime to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), as appropriate.
- Contact the cryptocurrency exchange you used to send the funds. Provide transaction details and any messages or account information you have.
Reporting does not guarantee that money will be recovered. Be cautious of anyone who contacts you promising to retrieve crypto for an upfront payment.
