A low price, a convincing title, or a seal is not proof on its own; look for multiple clues together.
Start by confirming the exact figure exists
Search the manufacturer’s official product catalog using the character, series, product name, and maker. Confirm the listing corresponds to a real release and that its release timing makes sense. Good Smile Company warns that bootlegs may borrow real brand names or use altered character names, so a plausible title is not enough. See Good Smile Company’s product catalog.
Make sure you are comparing the same version. A character may have several figures, editions, or releases, and packaging or authentication marks can differ by maker and production period. An image of a similar figure is not a reliable reference for another release.
Compare the listing with the official release
Use the maker’s own images and product information for the exact release. Check the box and figure for discrepancies across several details rather than treating one flaw as conclusive.

- Packaging and names: Look for misspellings, oddly translated or generic product names, pixelated artwork, and packaging that differs substantially from the official reference.
- Maker and brand marks: Check for the manufacturer and brand logos expected on that product. Good Smile Company says almost all of its products carry its company and brand logos on the packaging, while noting there are a few exceptions. Apply that guidance to Good Smile products, not every maker’s figures. See Good Smile Company’s guidance on identifying official products.
- Copyright and certification details: Check whether the information is present and consistent with the official reference; suspicious or unfamiliar details warrant closer scrutiny.
- Figure finish: Compare colors, paint application, sculpting, and molding. Obvious inconsistencies can be warning signs, but minor differences alone do not establish that an item is counterfeit.
- Release timing: A listing that claims an item was available before its documented release deserves scrutiny.
Understand which seals and labels apply
There is no single hologram or seal that every genuine anime figure must have. Authentication marks depend on the manufacturer and release date.
TAMASHII NATIONS says its packaging has carried a special anti-counterfeiting “TAMASHII NATIONS QUALITY” seal since 2023, with some exceptions. Its counterfeit-warning page says products released from 2018 to 2023 used hologram stickers. Those details apply to TAMASHII NATIONS products, not all anime figures. Likewise, use Good Smile Company’s logo advice only for its products and account for the exceptions it notes. An absent or different mark should prompt verification against the maker’s information for that release; it is not a universal test.
Check the seller and the actual item photos
A legitimate-looking product photo does not guarantee that the seller will ship the pictured item. Good Smile Company warns that stock images can appear on a site that still sends a bootleg. Inspect the named seller and the specific listing, even when it appears on a large marketplace.

- Check who is actually selling the item, not just the marketplace or storefront hosting the listing.
- Review seller feedback and the listing’s details for inconsistencies.
- If the listing relies only on stock photos or leaves important details out, ask for current photos of the actual box and figure.
- Compare those photos with the official images for the exact release before paying.

Use price as a warning signal, not a verdict
Compare the asking price with offers for the same release, taking its release history and condition into account. An inexplicably low price is a reason to investigate the seller, photos, and product details more carefully. It does not by itself prove the figure is counterfeit. A high price is no guarantee of authenticity either.

Where to buy with less risk
When available, the manufacturer’s own store or recognized official partner shops provide a clearer route to a genuine product. Good Smile Company recommends its online shop and official partners; TAMASHII NATIONS lists official shop options and a store locator on its counterfeit-warning page. Availability and partner lists can change, so confirm them on the maker’s current site.
If you buy through a marketplace, assess the exact seller and listing rather than assuming the platform verifies every item. Combining catalog verification, release-specific comparisons, actual-item photos, and seller checks is more useful than relying on any single badge or clue.

A quick pre-purchase checklist
- Does the maker’s official catalog show this exact character, product, and release?
- Do the claimed release timing, packaging, logos, and figure details match that release?
- Are the photos of the actual item, or has the seller provided current photos on request?
- Have you checked the named seller and its feedback rather than relying on the marketplace name?
- Does the price seem unusually low compared with offers for the same item, and have you investigated why?
- Have you checked the maker’s own store or official partner options?
Several consistent discrepancies increase concern, but the manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish one universal test that proves authenticity across every maker and release.
