No—receiving money does not require you to enter your UPI PIN. A PIN prompt authorizes a payment or another protected action. Before approving anything, check the transaction details shown in your UPI app, especially the payee and amount. Never share your PIN or OTP, and treat unsolicited links, QR codes, calls, and requests for urgent action with caution.

Do I need a UPI PIN to receive money?

No. A UPI PIN is private authorization information; entering it approves the action described in your app. NPCI says that “scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is only meant for making payments, not for receiving them.” NPCI’s UPI guidance also says bank customer support will not ask for your PIN.

If a caller, seller, or supposed support agent asks you to reveal your PIN, OTP, or password to release a refund, reward, or incoming payment, stop. Do not share the details or follow their instructions inside the payment app.

How to check a UPI request before approving it

  1. Read the transaction screen. Check the payee name and amount displayed in your UPI app before authorizing. Do not rely only on what a stranger says or on the appearance of a QR code.
  2. Identify what the app is asking you to do. A PIN prompt or approval request means you are authorizing an action, not simply receiving money. If you do not understand the request, cancel or leave it unapproved.
  3. Verify the recipient independently. For a purchase or transfer, confirm the recipient using a contact method you already trust, rather than relying on a number, link, or explanation supplied in an unsolicited message.
  4. Stop if the request is unexpected. Do not act under pressure, install an app, or share your screen because a caller claims there is an urgent problem.

Is it safe to scan a QR code to get paid?

A QR code is not proof that money is coming to you. NPCI warns that scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is for making a payment, not receiving one. If someone says a scan and PIN are needed to collect money, do not proceed. Read the payee and amount fields in your app and authorize only a transaction you intended to make.

Common UPI scam warning signs

  • Fake cashback or reward offers: A link or QR code promises a reward in exchange for entering a PIN or approving a payment.
  • Unsolicited collect requests: Someone asks you to approve a request you were not expecting, perhaps describing it as money being sent to you.
  • Fake support contacts: A phone number found in search results or a social-media grievance post may not belong to your bank or payment app. Use the app’s own help channel or independently verified official contact details.
  • Threats and artificial urgency: A caller pressures you to act immediately, disclose credentials, or install an unfamiliar app.
  • Unknown apps or screen access: Do not install an app at a stranger’s direction or give a caller access to your screen while using a payment app. RBI warns about spurious apps that can access sensitive device information, as well as SIM swaps and suspicious message links. RBI’s customer-awareness notice discusses these risks.
  • Investment or online-income promises: Treat claims of guaranteed returns or easy earnings as a reason to verify independently, not as a reason to authorize an unfamiliar transaction.

These warning signs are reasons to pause and verify; an unexpected request is not automatically fraudulent. The key is whether you recognize and intend the transaction shown in your app.

Does opening your UPI app approve a payment?

No. In a January 13, 2025 clarification about the “jumped-deposit” claim, NPCI stated: “Simply opening a UPI or bank application does not automatically approve a transaction.” NPCI says the user must navigate to the request, choose “pay,” and authorize it with the UPI PIN. Read NPCI’s clarification. This addresses the claim that opening an app alone approves a payment; it is not a guarantee against other forms of account or device compromise.

What should I do if I was scammed on UPI?

  1. Stop contact and do not authorize anything else. Leave the suspicious call, message, link, or app. Do not give another PIN or OTP.
  2. Contact your bank and UPI app promptly. Use their in-app support or independently verified official channels. NPCI says users can raise grievances or check transaction status through their participating UPI app. NPCI’s dispute-redressal guidance explains the route.
  3. Report cyber financial fraud by calling 1930. The Ministry of Home Affairs directs people to call 1930 for immediate reporting and to file a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Follow the call with the portal complaint and retain its acknowledgement. The Ministry’s parliamentary response describes the reporting route.
  4. Keep the evidence. Save transaction IDs, dates, amounts, screenshots, messages, phone numbers, and complaint acknowledgements. These details can help your bank, app, and authorities assess the case.

Do not assume that a payment can be stopped or recovered: NPCI says an initiated payment cannot be stopped. If your app shows a failed or pending transaction but your account was debited, raise a complaint through the app and contact your bank. NPCI’s FAQ says a failed transaction should reverse and advises contacting the bank if the refund has not arrived within one hour; that guidance is not a universal deadline for fraud reimbursement. See NPCI’s UPI FAQs and check your bank’s current dispute instructions for case-specific guidance.
