AI can make a phishing email, text, or voice message sound convincing. That does not make it trustworthy: focus on what the message asks you to do, then verify the request through a separate, known-good channel. Do not click, download, transfer money, log in, or share a code or sensitive information just because a message looks polished.
Why polished messages can still be phishing
Phishing is a deceptive message designed to trick someone into actions such as opening a harmful link or download, sharing information, or sending money. It can arrive by email, text, or social media, and scammers may pose as a person or organization you trust.
NIST warns that AI can make phishing more convincing. Its guidance recommends taking “a second, or third, look” at messages asking you to act, including requests to click a link, download a file, transfer funds, log in, or submit sensitive information. Correct spelling and smooth writing are not proof that a message is genuine; poor grammar may be a clue, but CISA describes it as less common than before.
There is no reliable visual, writing-style, or voice test established here for identifying AI-generated phishing. The safer question is whether the request makes sense and whether you can confirm it independently.

Warning signs to check in an email, text, or voice message
- An unexpected action: The message asks you to open an attachment, follow a link, log in, transfer money, or provide personal, financial, account, or authentication information.
- Pressure or emotion: It creates urgency, fear, or an appealing opportunity to rush you into acting before you can check.
- Unfamiliar or slightly altered contact details: The sender address, phone number, or website does not match the claimed person or organization. Look for small spelling differences and shortened URLs.
- A problem or offer that leads to a link: An unexpected invoice, account alert, payment issue, delivery notice, or refund offer asks you to follow a link or supply information.
- A request that does not fit the relationship: A supposed colleague, relative, bank, or service provider asks for an unusual payment, login, or one-time code.
Any one sign can have an innocent explanation, and a familiar name or polished message can be faked. Treat the requested action and the surrounding context as reasons to pause, not as a score that proves a message is genuine or fraudulent.
How to verify a suspicious request safely
- Pause. Do not click, download, reply with sensitive information, transfer money, log in through the message, or provide an authentication code.
- Check whether the contact makes sense. Do you have an account with the company, or do you know the person who contacted you? An unexpected message deserves extra scrutiny.
- Find contact details independently. Use a saved bookmark, the organization’s official app, a number on a payment card, or a known contact directory. Do not use the message’s link or phone number.
- Contact the supposed sender through a separate trusted channel. Ask whether they sent the message. For a call or voice message, look up a separate number and call it yourself rather than relying on the number that contacted you.
- Confirm the exact request. Verify the payment, login, file, or information request itself—not just that the person or organization exists. A real account or known contact can still be impersonated.
- If it is not confirmed, report and remove it. Use the email, phone, or platform’s reporting option, then delete the message. Do not use an unsubscribe link in a suspicious message; CISA warns that it may itself lead to phishing.

If you entered a password or authentication details
Change the affected password through the service’s official site or app, not through the message. If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. Review account activity and security settings, and contact the service if you cannot secure the account.

If you opened a link or attachment that may have installed harmful software
The FTC advises updating your security software, running a scan, and removing anything the scan identifies. Avoid entering passwords or financial information on a device you suspect is compromised until you have addressed the risk.

How to report phishing in the United States
The following reporting routes are US-specific; readers elsewhere should use their country’s consumer-protection, cybercrime, or telecom reporting channels.
- Forward phishing email to the Anti-Phishing Working Group at reportphishing@apwg.org, and report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Forward phishing texts to SPAM (7726).
- For suspected internet crime, file a report with the FBI at IC3.gov.
Reduce the damage a successful phish can cause
These measures serve different purposes: some can screen or contain threats, while others reduce account-takeover risk or help after exposure. None confirms whether a particular message is authentic.

| Safeguard | What it helps with | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Spam filtering and security software | Screening unwanted messages and protecting devices. | Cannot guarantee that every phishing message will be blocked. |
| Independent verification | Checking whether a particular person or organization made a particular request. | Does not prevent every harmful message from arriving; it requires you to verify through a separate trusted channel. |
| Multi-factor authentication (MFA) | Making account access harder if a scammer obtains a username and password. | Does not prove that a message is genuine or make it safe to disclose an authentication code. |
| Reporting and recovery services | Reporting a suspected scam and finding steps after information is exposed. | Do not undo every transfer or guarantee recovery of an account or money. |
The FTC recommends automatically updating security software and devices, using MFA, and backing up data. A hardware security key is one possible MFA credential. FIDO2 security keys can be used as a phishing-resistant MFA option on supported accounts, but they are account-protection tools—not detectors of AI-written messages—and are not required to verify a suspicious request.
