You usually cannot tell whether a bank message was written by AI just by reading it. Polished wording, correct spelling, and a bank logo do not prove it is genuine. Instead, judge what the message asks you to do—and verify any unexpected alert through a channel you already know belongs to your bank.
How can I tell if a bank text is real?
There is no reliable text-only test established by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidance cited here for identifying AI-written messages. A scammer can use AI to produce natural-sounding copy, but ordinary clues such as awkward grammar are not dependable either way. Logos and familiar-looking sender details can also be faked. Focus on whether you expected the message and whether it pressures you to take an unusual action. The FTC explains common phishing tactics in its phishing guidance and discusses impersonation in its impersonation scam advice.
Be cautious if an unexpected message claims suspicious account activity, says a payment method has a problem, or asks you to confirm financial details. Those claims may be designed to make you act before you check whether the alert is real.
Would my bank text me about suspicious activity?
A bank may send legitimate account alerts, but the fact that a text claims to be from your bank does not authenticate it. If you receive an unexpected alert, treat it as unverified until you check independently. Do not use the text’s link or phone number to investigate; open your bank’s app, type a website address you already know, or call the number printed on your card or statement.

Should I click the link to check?
No. An unexpected link or attachment is a reason to stop, not a safe way to confirm an account problem. Phishing messages commonly use alarming or urgent stories to prompt a click; a link can lead to a page seeking personal or financial information, while an attachment can contain malware. The FTC outlines these risks in its advice on hard-to-spot phishing scams.
- Do not click, open, reply, or provide details. Avoid links and attachments in the unexpected message.
- Check through a channel you already trust. Open the bank’s app, manually enter a known website address, or call the number on your card or a statement. Do not rely on contact details supplied in the message.
- Ask the bank whether the alert is real. If there is a genuine issue, the bank can confirm it through that independent channel. The FTC recommends this approach in its advice about unexpected texts.
What if they ask for my verification code?
Do not share a one-time verification code with someone who contacts you, even if the person claims to be from your bank or says the code is needed to stop fraud. Do not transfer money to a different account to “protect” it. The FTC says a person asking for your code is a scammer and that a demand to move money for protection is a scam. Hang up or stop responding, then contact your bank using a known number. If you already shared a code or moved funds, call the real bank promptly. See the FTC’s guidance on bank fraud calls.

What should I do if I already clicked or shared information?
Contact your bank through its app or a known phone number as soon as possible, explain what happened, and follow its instructions to secure the account. If you gave a scammer personal information, the FTC directs consumers to IdentityTheft.gov for identity-theft recovery guidance. Report the message and then delete it.
- Forward suspicious text messages to 7726 (SPAM).
- Forward phishing emails to reportphishing@apwg.org.
- Report fraud to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
These reporting routes come from the FTC’s phishing guidance. They are U.S. routes; reporting options and bank procedures may differ in other countries.

How can I reduce the risk to my account?
Use the bank’s security options, including multifactor authentication where available, and protect your login credentials. The FTC lists security keys among possible MFA credentials. A security key can help protect an account, but it cannot identify whether a message was written by AI or prove that its sender is your bank.
