Pause before opening an unexpected WhatsApp file. Check who sent it, why they sent it, what the file or link is asking you to do, and whether the details make sense. Verify the sender through a separate trusted channel. Treat an APK as an app installer—not a document—and do not install one sent unexpectedly in chat. On Android, stop if Play Protect warns you; no warning does not prove a file is safe.
Start with the request, not the file icon
A familiar contact, plausible filename, or ordinary-looking extension cannot establish that a file is safe. WhatsApp cautions that links and files can appear legitimate while being malicious. Read the whole message and ask what it wants you to do: view a document, visit a website, install an app, enable a feature, or provide information.
- Unexpected or unexplained: You were not expecting the file, or the sender cannot clearly explain it.
- Pressure or urgency: The message threatens an account problem, offers an implausible reward, or insists you act immediately.
- Requests for secrets or money: It asks for passwords, banking or identity details, or payment to activate or fix something.
- Out-of-character behavior: Even if the account belongs to someone you know, an unusual request merits confirmation through another known route.
WhatsApp advises caution around suspicious requests to download apps, tap links, or disclose personal information, and recommends looking closely at links and files: WhatsApp: About scams and suspicious messages.
Is this APK safe to install?
An APK is an Android app installer, not a normal document. Installing one from a WhatsApp message is sideloading: the app comes from outside the usual app-store route. Do not install an unsolicited APK simply because the sender says it is safe or because the filename looks familiar.

Google says Play Protect checks unknown apps at installation to help detect malicious code and sensitive permissions. It may warn about or block an app it identifies as harmful or suspicious. Some sensitive permissions, including SMS access and accessibility-related capabilities, can create serious risks when abused by apps from internet sources. Do not override a Play Protect warning to follow instructions in a chat. A scan without a warning is not a guarantee that an unknown app is harmless.
If you genuinely need the app, find it in Google Play or through the developer’s known official channel, rather than using the chat attachment. Keep Play Protect enabled. Google’s guidance explains checks for apps installed from unknown sources and related permission risks: Google Play Protect.

Check links and documents before opening
Inspect links without following them
Do not tap a suspicious link just to find out where it goes. If the message is otherwise credible and you can inspect the address safely, look at the full domain—not just the brand name or words displayed in the message. Watch for misspellings, extra words, unusual characters, or letters made to resemble those in a real domain. WhatsApp notes that lookalike-character links can lead to harmful destinations: WhatsApp: About suspicious links.
Be cautious with active content and hidden files
A document is not automatically safe because it is a PDF, spreadsheet, or other familiar format. Documents can contain malicious macros, and archives can conceal executable files. Be especially wary if a file asks you to enable macros or other active content, or sends you to a website to install a viewer or update. Do not treat every document with macros as malicious; the concern is being asked to run active content from an unverified source.

File-blocking rules vary by service. For example, Google’s list of blocked attachment types describes Gmail’s policy; it does not mean WhatsApp applies the same filter: Gmail: File types blocked in Gmail.
What to do before opening a WhatsApp file
- Stop and read the message. Identify the action it requests. If the message already looks suspicious, do not tap, forward, or share its link or file.
- Confirm the sender and purpose. Contact the person using a separate, previously known method—such as calling their usual number—and ask whether they sent the file and what it is. A familiar account does not authenticate the file’s contents.
- Check what the file or link actually asks you to do. Do not rely on the displayed name or icon. For a link, inspect the full domain for lookalike spelling or unusual characters without visiting a suspicious destination.
- Do not install an APK received unexpectedly. If you need that app, locate it through a trusted app source or the developer’s official channel instead.
- Heed Android warnings. If Play Protect flags an app as unknown, harmful, or suspicious—or the app requests risky permissions—stop rather than bypassing the warning.
Use official WhatsApp and trusted app sources
Google recommends getting mobile apps from sources you trust and identifies Play Protect as built-in Android malware protection. WhatsApp says unofficial modified versions of its app are unsupported and may put privacy and security at risk. If someone sends you a supposed WhatsApp APK, use WhatsApp’s official app rather than installing a modified copy from chat.

What to do next depends on what happened. Viewing a document, tapping a link, downloading a file, installing an APK, granting permissions, and entering a password are different events; opening a document does not by itself prove that a device is infected. Likewise, deleting a file alone cannot be assumed to remove any threat.

The appropriate response depends on the file, device, and action taken; no single cleanup step is established as sufficient for every case.
Does scanning a file prove it is safe?
No scan can certify an unknown file as harmless. A scan may help identify known threats, but it does not replace checking the file’s origin, verifying an unexpected request, or heeding platform warnings. Avoid uploading sensitive documents to a public scanning site unless you have checked how that service handles and retains uploaded files.
