Windows 11 does not split two monitors into one giant left-and-right window grid. Instead, you first use Extend mode to create two independent work areas, then snap windows separately on each monitor.
For example, you can place Outlook and a browser side by side on monitor 1, then put Teams and a document side by side on monitor 2.
1. Set both monitors to Extend
Connect both monitors to the computer, dock, or graphics adapter. Then:
- Press Windows key + P.
- Select Extend.
Extend creates one desktop spread across both screens. Do not select Duplicate if you want separate windows: Duplicate shows the same desktop on both monitors rather than providing two independent work areas.

2. Arrange the monitors correctly
Windows needs to know whether your second monitor is physically on the left, right, above, or below the first one. This determines how the mouse pointer and windows move between screens.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Select Identify to show the monitor number on each physical screen.
- Drag the numbered display rectangles until their positions match your desk.
- Select Apply.
If one monitor sits slightly higher or lower than the other, reproduce that offset in the Display settings diagram. Otherwise, the pointer may appear to stop at an unexpected point when crossing between monitors.
3. Snap two windows side by side on each monitor
Windows snaps a window on the monitor where that window is currently active. It does not automatically divide the entire two-monitor desktop into two halves.
- Click the first app on monitor 1.
- Press Windows key + Left Arrow or Windows key + Right Arrow.
- Windows places the app in that half of monitor 1.
- Choose another app from Snap Assist to fill the other half.
- Repeat the process with two apps on monitor 2.
For example, activate a browser on the right-hand monitor and press Windows key + Left Arrow. The browser snaps to the left half of that monitor, not the left half of the combined desktop.

4. Use Snap layouts for three or four windows
Snap layouts are useful when you want more than two windows on one monitor, such as three columns or four quadrants.

- Open the app you want to position.
- Hover over its Maximize button.
- Select a zone in the Snap layout.
- Choose additional apps from Snap Assist to fill the remaining zones.
You can also press Windows key + Z, then select a layout and zone. Available layouts depend partly on the monitor’s size and orientation.
Snap layouts apply to the monitor containing the active window. To use a layout on the other monitor, first move the window there with Windows key + Shift + Left Arrow or Windows key + Shift + Right Arrow.
5. Split windows by dragging
Keyboard shortcuts are faster, but dragging works well when you want to position a window visually:
- Drag a window to the left or right edge of a monitor to snap it to that half.
- Drag it to a corner to snap it into a quarter.
- Drag it to the top of the screen to open the Snap bar, then drop it on a layout zone.
The top-edge Snap bar was added in Windows 11 version 22H2. If dragging a window to the top produces no layout bar, check that option under Settings > System > Multitasking > Snap windows.
6. Turn Snap features on or change their behavior
- Open Start > Settings > System > Multitasking.
- Turn on Snap windows.
- Expand Snap windows to see the individual options.
Useful settings include:
- When I snap a window, show what I can snap next to it
- Show snap layouts when I hover over a window’s maximize button
- Show snap layouts when I drag a window to the top of my screen
- Show my snapped windows when I hover over the taskbar apps, in Task View, and when I press Alt + Tab
- When I drag a window, let me snap it without dragging all the way to the screen edge
What to do when the setup does not work
The second monitor is not detected
- Press Windows key + P and select Extend.
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect.
- Check both ends of the monitor cable.
- Try another cable or another video output.
- Install available Windows and graphics-driver updates.
A basic display splitter cannot normally extend one desktop to two independent monitors; it sends the same signal to both screens. Also check whether the computer, dock, or graphics adapter supports the number of connected displays.

Windows snaps to the wrong physical side
Open Settings > System > Display, select Identify, and drag the numbered displays to match their physical positions. Select Apply when finished.
The Snap layout does not appear over Maximize
Go to Settings > System > Multitasking > Snap windows and enable Show snap layouts when I hover over a window’s maximize button.

In that case, use Windows key + Z or the left and right arrow shortcuts instead.
Dragging to the top does nothing
Under Settings > System > Multitasking > Snap windows, turn on Show snap layouts when I drag a window to the top of my screen. The feature requires Windows 11 version 22H2 or later.
A window disappears after disconnecting a monitor
Open Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays. Check these options:

- Remember window locations based on monitor connection
- Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected
These settings control how Windows handles window positions when a monitor is unplugged and later reconnected.
A window is on the wrong monitor
Click the window to make it active, then press Windows key + Shift + Left Arrow or Windows key + Shift + Right Arrow to move it. Once it is on the correct display, use Windows key + Left Arrow or Windows key + Right Arrow to snap it.
A practical two-monitor arrangement
For a common four-window setup:
- Set the monitors to Extend.
- Arrange them under Settings > System > Display.
- On monitor 1, snap your browser left and document editor right.
- On monitor 2, snap email left and chat or a terminal right.
- Use Windows key + Shift + Arrow whenever an app opens on the wrong display.
This gives each monitor its own two-column layout while preserving a single desktop for moving apps between screens.

Can I split two monitors into four sections in Windows 11?
Yes. Set the displays to Extend, then snap two windows on each monitor. Use the left and right arrow shortcuts for two columns, or Snap layouts for three columns and four quadrants.
Why does Windows snap a window to the wrong monitor?
The window may be active on another display, or the monitors may be arranged incorrectly in Windows. Use Settings > System > Display to match the numbered displays to your desk, then move the window with Windows key + Shift + Left/Right Arrow.

Does Duplicate mode support separate windows on two monitors?
No. Duplicate shows the same desktop on both screens. Select Extend from the Windows key + P menu to use the monitors as separate work areas.
Why is Snap Assist not showing the other open apps?
Open Settings > System > Multitasking, expand Snap windows, and enable “When I snap a window, show what I can snap next to it.”
Can a display splitter create two independent monitors?
A standard display splitter generally duplicates one video signal rather than extending the desktop. Use separate supported video outputs or a compatible dock or graphics adapter.
The Bottom Line
For two independent split-screen workspaces, press Windows key + P, choose Extend, arrange the monitors under Settings > System > Display, and snap windows on each display separately. Use Windows key + Shift + Arrow to move a window between monitors and Windows key + Z for larger Snap layouts.
