To use two apps side by side on a Chromebook in tablet mode, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the window overview, drag one window to the left or right edge, then tap the second window. Drag the center divider to change the space each gets; drag it all the way to an edge to leave split screen. Google’s Chromebook touchscreen instructions describe this gesture-based method.
Split screen with the touchscreen
- Open both apps or windows you want to use.
- From the top of the screen, swipe down to show the overview of open windows.
- Drag one window to the left or right edge of the screen.
- Tap the other window to place it in the remaining space.
- Drag the line between the two windows to adjust their sizes.
To close the split layout, drag the center line all the way to either side. The remaining window returns to the full screen.
Choose a window-control method on a keyboard or trackpad
If your Chromebook is being used with a keyboard or trackpad, ChromeOS also supports snapping windows with their title bars or window controls. Google’s window-management instructions explain these layouts.
- Drag a title bar: Drag a window to the left or right edge to snap it into half the screen, then choose another open window for the other half.
- Use the maximize menu: Open the window’s maximize/restore menu and select a Split or Partial layout. You can also hold the maximize control to choose a side before selecting the window to pair.
Use Chrome split view for two websites
If you only need to compare or reference two websites, Chrome’s browser split view displays both sites inside one Chrome window rather than arranging two separate app windows. Google documents the Chromebook shortcut Ctrl+Alt+N for opening split view. See Chrome Help’s split view instructions for the browser feature.

Keep a window pairing with Snap Groups
For a repeatable two-window setup, ChromeOS Snap Groups can preserve a pairing. After snapping one window, select another from the suggested list to create the group. Google says Snap Groups require ChromeOS version M128 or newer.

- Touchscreen tablet mode: Use the swipe-down overview and drag-to-edge gesture.
- Two separate apps: Use ChromeOS split layout, with touch gestures or title-bar and maximize controls.
- Two websites in Chrome: Use Chrome split view so both sites remain within one browser window.
- A recurring pair of windows: Use Snap Groups on ChromeOS M128 or newer.
On a tablet, portrait orientation leaves less horizontal room for each window than landscape. If the panes feel too narrow, rotate the Chromebook or move the divider to give the active app more space.
