A browser that feels slow can mean pages take longer to load, startup drags, scrolling stutters, tabs switch slowly, or CPU and memory use spike. Those symptoms point to different possible causes. First check whether the problem affects one site or the whole browser; then use the matching steps below rather than resetting settings or clearing all data straight away.
First, identify what is slow
Note whether the slowdown affects one page or many, and whether it happens during loading, startup, scrolling, video playback, or tab switching. Then open the same page in another browser. If one site is slow in both, the site or your network may be responsible—not necessarily the browser. Microsoft recommends checking the connection and, when network trouble is suspected, restarting the modem or router. Microsoft Edge troubleshooting
- One page is slow in every browser: investigate that site or your connection.
- Many pages are slow in one browser: check its tabs, extensions, updates, and resource use.
- Scrolling or video stutters: check CPU use and graphics acceleration.
- Startup is slow: look for browser startup settings, extensions, and system load.
These are clues, not proof: a single overloaded tab or a busy device can affect several symptoms at once.

Reduce the work your device is doing
Close tabs you are not using, quit unnecessary apps, and pause large downloads while troubleshooting. Each open tab needs memory, and some pages run scripts that use substantial CPU or memory. Closing a tab can free resources, but close it only after saving anything important.

On Microsoft Edge, Sleeping Tabs can reduce resource use from inactive pages. Add exceptions for sites that must stay active, such as pages playing media or handling ongoing work. The setting’s name and location can vary by version.
Find the tab, extension, or process using resources
Use the browser’s own task manager where available. Sort by CPU or memory and look for a tab, extension, or process that is unusually busy. Close a clearly responsible tab or process only if it is safe to do so; unsaved work may be lost.

Check whether an extension is slowing the browser
Extensions can add useful features, but their effect depends on what they do and how they are used; there is no reliable universal speed gain from removing a particular number of them. Temporarily disable extensions to test whether the slowdown changes. If it does, turn them back on one at a time until the problem returns, then remove or leave disabled the extension that triggers it.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Open your browser’s extensions or add-ons page.
- Temporarily turn off extensions, then check the same pages and tasks that were slow.
- If performance improves, re-enable extensions individually and retest after each one.
- Remove extensions you no longer need.
Firefox users can also try Troubleshoot Mode, which disables extensions and themes and changes some settings for diagnosis. If the problem disappears there, investigate extensions or customization before changing unrelated settings. Availability and exact controls vary by browser, operating system, and version. Pages display incorrectly or will not load properly
Clearing cached files can help with some display or page-loading problems, but it is not a general speed boost. Browsers keep cached temporary files partly to help pages load faster. If you try clearing data, choose only what is relevant to the problem. Clearing cookies or site data can sign you out or reset preferences for affected sites.

Hardware acceleration lets a browser use the graphics processor for tasks such as video, games, and animations, which can reduce CPU load. If acceleration is unavailable or software rendering is used, video, WebGL, or canvas work can increase CPU use. But acceleration can also interact poorly with a particular graphics driver or device, so the right setting is symptom-dependent.

- Check the browser’s performance or system settings to see whether hardware acceleration is enabled. Exact labels and paths vary.
- Update the device’s graphics driver through the appropriate system or hardware vendor channel.
- If you are diagnosing a graphics glitch or choppy playback, change the acceleration setting and restart the browser if prompted.
- Retest the same page or video. Keep whichever state works better; restore the original setting if the test makes performance or display worse.
Firefox Troubleshoot Mode turns hardware acceleration off as part of diagnosis. Mozilla Support describes its recommended performance settings this way: “These recommended settings work well for most users, but you can adjust them for better speed, lower memory usage, or improved stability.” Mozilla Support: Firefox’s performance settings · Microsoft Edge troubleshooting
Startup is slow or the browser remains slow after troubleshooting
Install available browser updates: performance and stability fixes may be included, although an update is not a guaranteed cure for every slowdown. If the issue continues, check the operating system’s resource monitor while the browser is slow. High memory, CPU, or disk use from another app can make the browser appear to be the cause. Check for malware using trusted security software, and be wary of third-party utilities that promise to speed up the whole computer.
Reset only after less disruptive tests
A reset is broader than disabling one extension or clearing a specific site’s data. Use it only when targeted steps have not helped, and review what the reset changes first.
- Microsoft Edge: Microsoft says resetting Edge restores some settings to their defaults while preserving favorites, history, and saved passwords. Other settings may change. Microsoft Edge troubleshooting and reset
- Firefox: Refresh Firefox resets the profile to default settings while preserving essential information. Review Mozilla’s explanation before proceeding so you know what will be removed or retained. Refresh Firefox
Menu paths and reset behavior may change across browser versions and operating systems, and a work- or school-managed device may restrict settings. If a setting is unavailable, check with the device administrator rather than trying to bypass management controls.

A practical order of operations
- Record the symptom and whether it affects one page or many.
- Compare the same page in another browser to help distinguish browser-specific trouble from a site or network issue.
- Update the browser; close unused tabs and apps, and pause downloads while testing.
- Check CPU and memory use in the browser’s task manager or process view.
- Test extensions by disabling them temporarily, then re-enable one at a time if that isolates the cause.
- Clear only the cache or site data relevant to a page-loading or display problem.
- For graphics-related lag, test hardware acceleration and check graphics drivers.
- If the problem persists, inspect whole-device resource use and malware; consider reset or refresh only after understanding its effects.
Using another browser is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix. Extension performance varies with usage conditions, code complexity, and privacy practices; a 2024 empirical study of Chrome extensions does not establish a universal speed improvement for everyday users.
