Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo shorten early electrical rule-checking (ERC) cycles on an incomplete IC layout, run focused checks against the errors you need to resolve now, then use diagnostics that take you directly to the affected connectivity. Siemens says its Calibre nmLVS Recon ERC and Softchk workflows are designed for this purpose. The vendor describes mechanisms such as selective device recognition, reuse of an existing LVS database, improved path finding and interactive soft-connectivity debugging—but it has not published a controlled result showing a universal percentage or number of hours saved.
First identify which kind of electrical rule checking you mean
“ERC” can describe checks at different points in an electronics workflow. This article focuses on early integrated-circuit (IC) layout-versus-schematic (LVS) and circuit verification, particularly the Calibre nmLVS Recon ERC and Softchk capabilities described by Siemens. It is not a guide to PCB electrical design-rule checking or schematic-only connectivity checks.
- IC LVS and circuit verification: Compares layout-derived connectivity with the intended circuit and helps identify connectivity problems during physical design. Siemens positions Recon ERC and Softchk as focused checks for early-stage IC verification on designs that may still be incomplete.
- Schematic ERC: Checks schematic objects and connections. For example, Ansys Electronics v251 documentation lists unconnected pins, overlapping components and nets with multiple output pins, and describes navigating from a result to the implicated schematic object. See Ansys’ schematic ERC documentation.
- PCB DRC: Checks a board against electrical, manufacturing or other board rules. KiCad 9.0 documentation says its PCB DRC checks board requirements and pad connectivity to the netlist or schematic; it also warns that unfilled zones can lead to incorrect results. PCB DRC addresses a different design layer from early IC LVS/ERC.
Using the right category matters: a PCB clearance check, a schematic-pin check and a layout-connectivity investigation do not diagnose the same problem.
Why early IC ERC can become a turnaround bottleneck
An unfinished layout may contain many connectivity errors that are expected to disappear as the design develops. A broad verification run can return a large number of results, making it difficult to distinguish a meaningful issue from one caused by incomplete work. Repeatedly running checks and investigating long or unclear error paths can slow the next design iteration.

Siemens’ 2022 technical paper says, “A single ERC check can take hours to run on incomplete or dirty designs and may require multiple debug cycles.” That is the paper’s qualitative description; it does not specify a benchmark population or machine configuration. The practical issue it identifies is the combined cost of runtime and repeated debugging, not simply the time needed to launch a check.
How Recon is intended to shorten the debug loop
Siemens describes Calibre nmLVS Recon as a way to perform focused early-stage LVS and circuit-verification runs rather than treating every early iteration as a full sign-off exercise. Its paper identifies several mechanisms:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Focused rule execution and selective device recognition: Run the relevant ERC rules and selectively recognize devices needed for path checking, rather than doing unnecessary work for the immediate debug question.
- Reuse of an existing LVS database: When a previously generated LVS database is available, reuse can avoid repeating some setup or extraction work. The benefit depends on whether the database is suitable for the current run.
- Enhanced path finding: Improve the information available about connectivity paths so an engineer can trace an error more directly.
- Additional diagnostics for dirty designs: Provide more debugging information when the layout is incomplete and results may otherwise be harder to interpret.
- Interactive Softchk handling: Support interactive fixing and confirmation for soft-connectivity issues, keeping the check-and-correct loop close to the reported result.
These are vendor-described product capabilities and intended benefits, not independent evidence that every design or technology will run faster. Siemens’ product overview calls Recon “the first circuit verification tool designed specifically to improve early LVS verification and debugging flows while reducing overall IC design verification and debugging time”; that is product positioning, not a comparative finding.
A practical early-check iteration
Use early checks to answer a specific design question, then reserve sign-off verification for the appropriate complete flow. The steps below synthesize the vendor documentation; they are not a claim of a personally tested procedure.

- Choose the verification layer and immediate question. Confirm that the problem is IC layout connectivity or LVS/ERC, not a schematic-only or PCB rule issue. Identify the rules or connectivity path that matter at this stage.
- Run a focused early check. Use the relevant ERC or soft-connectivity checks for the current debug task. Avoid interpreting every result from an incomplete design as a sign-off defect.
- Use available LVS data and targeted path checking. If an existing LVS database is appropriate to the run, Siemens describes reusing it. Apply selective device recognition where it supports the path check you need.
- Inspect and navigate from the diagnostic. Follow the reported path or implicated object, then decide whether it represents a real design error, an expected consequence of unfinished work, or an issue that needs further investigation.
- Fix applicable problems and rerun the focused check. For soft-connectivity cases, use the interactive fix-and-confirm behavior described for Softchk where available. Confirm that the correction addresses the reported connectivity rather than merely suppressing a symptom.
- Run the required sign-off flow at the appropriate stage. Siemens presents Recon as an early focused workflow on the path toward sign-off; the cited material does not establish that an early check replaces sign-off verification.
How to tell whether the workflow is actually faster
“Dramatic” is not a measurable outcome unless the team defines a baseline and records what changed. The reviewed Siemens material describes capabilities and intended benefits, but does not provide an independent controlled benchmark, a matched baseline comparison, a percentage reduction, or a named customer result establishing a typical productivity gain or tapeout acceleration.
For an internal evaluation, compare representative designs under the same flow conditions. Record the run scope and design maturity alongside both tool runtime and engineering effort; a shorter run that leaves errors harder to diagnose may not improve total turnaround.

- Repeatability: Count the checks and debug cycles needed to resolve a defined set of issues.
- Flow fit: Check integration with the existing design process, rule files and sign-off requirements.
Keep the comparison scoped: do not infer a tapeout-schedule improvement from a faster individual check unless the team measures that broader outcome.

PCB DRC may be relevant to teams working across both IC and board design, but its rule scope is not interchangeable with IC LVS/ERC. Siemens describes HyperLynx DRC for PCB issues across signal integrity, power integrity, EMI/EMC, safety and analog domains. Its product page states “over 90” domain-based parameterizable rules, while a separate fact sheet states “over 100” checks. These are vendor-published counts on different materials, not directly comparable figures; edition and version context would be needed to reconcile them. See the HyperLynx DRC product page and HyperLynx DRC fact sheet.

For PCB work, rule configuration should reflect the board’s manufacturing and electrical requirements. Autodesk Fusion documentation recommends setting rules around manufacturing needs and prioritizing stricter scopes for checks such as clearance, copper width and via drill size. That is useful PCB guidance, but it does not describe the early IC verification workflow covered here.
