If your iPad feels slow, first work out whether the problem is limited to internet-connected apps or affects the whole device. Then check free storage, a stuck app, Low Power Mode and temperature. These steps can resolve common causes of sluggishness, but they cannot guarantee that an older iPad will perform like a new one.
First, find out what feels slow
Notice whether the Home Screen, Settings, offline apps and files stored on the iPad also respond slowly. If those work normally but web pages, streaming or other online features lag, investigate the connection before changing device settings. Network congestion or a cellular connection that is reconnecting can make an iPad seem slow even when local performance is normal, according to Apple’s slow-device guidance.
- Try Wi-Fi or test the iPad in another location.
- If mobile-data problems continue in multiple places, contact your network provider.
- If offline tasks and online tasks both feel slow, continue with the device checks below.
Check storage before deleting apps or files
Go to Settings > General > [device] Storage and review the available space and Apple’s recommendations. Apple recommends keeping at least 1 GB free to avoid slowdowns. That is a published recommendation, not a promise that freeing exactly 1 GB will make every iPad faster.
Where storage is tight, consider offloading an app you do not currently need. Offloading frees the app’s storage while retaining its documents and data. Deleting removes the app and its related data, so choose that option only if you are comfortable removing that information. Back up anything important before deleting personal data.

Quit only the app that is stuck
If a particular app has stopped responding, quit and reopen that app. Avoid routinely force-closing everything in the app switcher: Apple says unnecessary force closing can slow a device because a closed app takes longer to reopen while its data reloads. Recently used apps do not all consume resources just because they appear in the switcher; they use resources when active or performing certain background tasks. See Apple’s app-switching guidance.
Check Low Power Mode and temperature
If you need full responsiveness, check Settings > Battery. Turn off Low Power Mode if it is on. Apple says the mode reduces power use by disabling some features or making them work more slowly.

Also consider the iPad’s surroundings. Very hot or cold conditions can affect performance. Move the device to a moderate-temperature environment and let it return to normal conditions before judging whether it is still slow.
Look at battery health if the model supports it
On supported iPad models, open Settings > Battery and look for Battery Health. The feature is not available on every model. Rechargeable batteries lose capacity and peak performance as they age, so a battery issue may be relevant when there are other signs of battery wear.

If Battery Health displays Service, consider replacement and follow the onscreen instructions. Treat this as a model- and diagnosis-specific repair path, not a general speed-up purchase. If you are unsure which repair is suitable, seek professional service. Any independently sold replacement part must be checked for compatibility with the exact iPad model; Apple does not endorse third-party products. If the slowdown began after an update
After an iPadOS update, background tasks can temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance. If battery life dropped after updating, Apple advises waiting a few days and checking again. Avoid treating a short-lived post-update change as proof that the iPad needs a repair.

When to restart or seek service
If touch response is abnormal, restart the iPad and test it again. A screen that fails to register touches correctly can feel like general slowness. If the touch problem persists after restarting, Apple says service may be needed. For continuing sluggishness, use the checks above to identify the affected area rather than assuming a battery, accessory or cleaner app will solve it; Apple’s guidance does not promise a like-new result or specify a measured speed gain for these steps.
