Keep the pieces for the active build together, sort them into a few useful categories, and divide a category further only when finding parts becomes slow. For one set, sorting by type or size is a practical starting point; for several sets, keep each set’s pieces separate before sorting within them. Choose containers that suit your categories and workspace, then return parts to the same places between sessions.
Choose a sorting system that fits the build
LEGO identifies four common ways to sort: by color, set, size, or type. It says there is no single right way to organize a collection; the useful system is the one that makes your pieces manageable. See LEGO’s sorting and storage guidance.
For an active build, start with the problem you need to solve: keeping sets distinct, finding a shape, or locating a color. You can combine methods rather than sorting every piece along every dimension.
- One set in progress: Keep the set’s pieces together and consider sorting by type or size. Shape-based groups can be convenient when you are locating parts from the instructions.
- Several sets or a mixed collection: Separate the active set’s pieces from the others first. If a group contains many similar parts, divide that group by type or size.
- Color-heavy sorting: Sort by color if that is how you naturally recognize the pieces, or if color is the most useful distinction for your build.
These are practical starting points, not a rule that every collection needs the same categories. LEGO’s own advice is: “Like creative building, there’s no right or wrong way to sort your beloved LEGO collection so find the way that works best for you.”

Set up the pieces in stages
Use broad groups first. If searching one group becomes inconvenient, split it into smaller categories. There is no prescribed number of bins or sorting stages; the goal is to make parts easy enough to find without creating more sorting work than the build requires.
- Make a home for the active build. Put its pieces in a dedicated bin, tray, or group of bags. If the parts belong to multiple sets, keep their identities separate.
- Choose a first-pass category. Sort the active set by type, size, or color—whichever distinction will help you find the next piece.
- Refine only the slow groups. If a broad group is awkward to search, divide it further. For example, separate plates from other pieces, or split a group by size.
- Label containers when useful. Consistent labels such as “plates,” “technic,” or “small dark pieces” can make an opaque or multi-container setup easier to navigate. These labels are a practical suggestion, not a LEGO-prescribed system.
- Reset after each session. Return loose pieces to their categories and keep the instruction manual or digital instructions accessible. LEGO’s storage ideas include files, folders, binders, and the Building Instructions App for keeping instructions organized.
Pick containers for visibility, access, and space
LEGO lists clear bins, tool or craft boxes, sandwich bags, plastic drawer systems, food storage containers, LEGO Storage bricks, and minifigure display cases as examples. The right choice depends on your sorting approach and collection size. Consider whether each container has useful compartments, whether you can see its contents, whether it holds enough for your category, and whether it fits your workspace and how you move the build.

Keep pieces dry and away from heat and direct sunlight. LEGO says temperatures above 104°F (40°C) may make bricks brittle or discolored over time. This is LEGO’s manufacturer care guidance; the help page’s publication year is not stated. Keep instructions with the project or in a consistent location so you can resume without searching for them.
