How Quordle guesses and clues work
In the Quordle.me version described on its undated game page, you solve four five-letter answers at the same time with nine attempts. Each submitted guess is checked against all four boards. A guess must be a valid five-letter English word, and the cited rules page says you cannot submit the same word twice. Rules and accepted words may differ on other Quordle-branded or similar sites.
Read the color feedback independently on each board:
- Green: the letter is correct and in the correct position on that board.
- Yellow: the letter is in that board’s answer, but not in the position you tried.
- Gray: the letter is absent from that board’s answer, subject to how the particular game handles repeated letters.
A letter marked gray on one grid may still be yellow or green on another. Do not treat the keyboard or one board’s colors as universal clues.
Step 1: Choose an opening guess for coverage
Start with a valid five-letter word that tests several distinct, common letters. The purpose is to reveal useful information across the four answers, not necessarily to solve one immediately. Avoid opening with a narrow guess that tests unusual letters or is useful on only one board.
There is no source-backed universally optimal opener. One third-party guide offers TEARS/CHINO and ADIEU/SNOUT as example starter pairs, but the available evidence does not show that these outperform other choices or guarantee a solve. Treat them as optional letter-coverage ideas, and adjust after seeing the first clues.
Step 2: Record the clues separately for each board
After each guess, keep a compact record for each grid: fixed green positions, known-present yellow letters and the positions those letters cannot occupy, and letters ruled out there. A small four-row note can help if the boards become difficult to track:
- Board 1: fixed positions; present letters and excluded positions; absent letters.
- Board 2: fixed positions; present letters and excluded positions; absent letters.
- Board 3: fixed positions; present letters and excluded positions; absent letters.
- Board 4: fixed positions; present letters and excluded positions; absent letters.
Keep the notes board-specific. A yellow letter must move on that board; it may have a different status on any of the others.

Step 3: Make each guess answer a useful question
Before submitting, decide what you want the next word to tell you. If several boards still have few clues, choose a word that tests useful, untried letters. If one board has a clear pattern, a candidate that fits it may also reveal information elsewhere. Do not keep repeating a memorized opening sequence once the feedback makes it less useful.
Evaluate a candidate using four practical considerations:

- Board progress: Does it fit a live pattern or potentially solve a developed board?
- Guess cost: Is the information worth using one of the remaining attempts?
- Adaptability: Does it respond to the actual colors on your boards rather than a fixed sequence?
Step 4: Narrow each board’s possible answers
Check candidate words against that board’s constraints: green letters must stay fixed, yellow letters must appear elsewhere, and gray letters should be excluded subject to repeated-letter feedback. A word that fits one board is not automatically a good fit for the other three. When a letter’s status differs by board, preserve that distinction rather than ruling it out globally.
Step 5: Turn the strongest patterns into answers
As the boards gain more clues, shift from broad exploration toward guesses that fit their increasingly specific patterns. Solving a more developed board can simplify what remains to track, but it is a strategic option, not a rule: a guess aimed at that board is worthwhile only if it also makes sense against the shared attempt budget and the information still needed elsewhere.

Step 6: Protect the remaining guesses
In the nine-attempt format described by Quordle.me, avoid late guesses that neither fit a plausible answer nor test a deliberate uncertainty. Before submitting, verify the word against the clues for every board where it matters, and confirm that the game accepts it. The cited rules describe valid five-letter English words, but accepted dictionaries can vary by implementation.
Why one fixed strategy cannot solve every Quordle
Starting with broad coverage is useful when you have little information; continuing to use broad guesses after a board is nearly solved can waste a turn. Conversely, an answer-focused guess may advance one board while teaching you little about the others. The practical strategy is to change emphasis as the colors accumulate: explore when uncertainty is broad, then exploit the board-specific patterns you have found.
Game details are version-specific. Quordle.me’s undated page, accessed in 2026, describes four boards, five-letter answers and nine attempts; another surfaced FAQ describes unlimited rounds, while a separate rules page describes a nine-guess game. Those statements may refer to different implementations, so check the rules shown on the site you are playing rather than assuming that daily scheduling, unlimited play or dictionary behavior is universal.
