Capture all seven before choosing a rail, actuator, linear module or Cartesian axis. Then turn the information into acceleration, deceleration and stopping load cases, compare drive technologies, and verify the result against current manufacturer ratings and life calculations.
The framework comes from Bosch Rexroth. It is designed to prevent a common failure in machine design: selecting a component from a payload number while overlooking moments, motion profiles, contamination or service life.
What LOSTPED stands for
LOSTPED means Load, Orientation, Speed, Travel, Precision, Environment and Duty cycle. Each letter represents a requirement that can change the correct guide, drive, motor, bearing arrangement or lubrication strategy.
“A common mistake that engineers and designers make when sizing and selecting linear motion systems is to overlook critical application requirements in the final system.” — Bosch Rexroth-authored guidance reproduced in EE Times and Tech Briefs.

There is no universal load, speed, accuracy or service-life number that applies to every LOSTPED application. Final sizing depends on the selected component, its catalog ratings, the actual load cases and the manufacturer’s calculation method.
The seven LOSTPED factors
1. Load: calculate more than payload mass
Record the payload mass, thrust force and every external force. Include tooling, grippers, cables, hoses and anything mounted to the moving carriage. Identify whether the dominant force is downward, lifting, side-loading or axial thrust.
Load changes during a move. Acceleration and deceleration add forces to the guide and drive, while an emergency stop can create a separate peak case. Evaluate at least steady motion, acceleration, deceleration and stopping conditions rather than sizing from the stationary payload alone.
For a guide, also record where the load acts relative to the bearing spacing. An offset load creates roll and pitch moments that can govern capacity even when the total mass appears modest.

2. Orientation: define gravity and moments
State whether the axis is horizontal, vertical, inclined or inverted. A vertical axis must support gravity during a stationary dwell and may need a brake or other retention method; an inclined axis has both thrust and lateral components.
Draw the load’s center of gravity and its distance from the guide carriage. Resolve the resulting roll, pitch and yaw moments before comparing catalog ratings. Guide constructions can have different capacities in different directions.
Bosch Rexroth cites the CKK Compact Module’s dual Ball Rail System as an example for applications with side-mounted or axial loads. Treat that as a design example, not a blanket guarantee: confirm the current module’s ratings and your moment calculations with the applicable catalog.
3. Speed: specify the complete move profile
Write down target velocity, acceleration, deceleration, cycle time and dwell time. State whether the motion uses a trapezoidal profile—acceleration, near-constant speed and deceleration—or a triangular profile that accelerates and decelerates without a long constant-speed segment.

The same top speed can produce very different bearing and motor loads depending on acceleration and how often the axis reverses. Include settling time and any reduced-speed approach or stop segment in the cycle description.
4. Travel: size the stroke and the stopping margin
Define the required working stroke or range of motion. Add any overtravel needed for tool clearance, homing, calibration or an emergency stop. The usable travel is not necessarily the same as the nominal catalog stroke.
Check that the selected drive, guide and cable-management system can accommodate the full stroke without exceeding allowable speed, load or bending limits.
5. Precision: separate three different requirements
Do not use “accuracy” as a single specification. Document:

- Travel accuracy: how closely the axis follows the intended path as it moves.
- Positioning accuracy: how close it gets to a commanded target.
- Repeatability: how closely it returns to the same position over repeated moves.
Decide which characteristic matters most, and state measurement conditions such as direction of approach, payload, temperature and speed. A design that needs high repeatability may not need the same travel accuracy, and a fast axis may require a different compromise than a precision inspection axis.
Belt, ball-screw and linear-motor drives make different compromises among speed, thrust, stroke, stiffness, precision, maintenance and cost. No mechanism is universally best; select against the complete requirement rather than a single headline specification.
6. Environment: design for contamination and maintenance
Record temperature range, dust, dirt, liquid exposure, washdown, humidity, cleanroom classification, electrostatic-discharge requirements and sensitivity to generated particles. Also state whether routine relubrication is possible.
The environmental decision may require sealing strips, coatings, special lubricants, protected cable routing or positive air pressure. A component that meets load and speed requirements in a clean laboratory may fail prematurely in abrasive dust or repeated washdown.

7. Duty cycle: connect motion to life
Describe moves per hour and per day, distance per move, dwell time and whether operation is intermittent or continuous. Estimate heat build-up and the service life the machine must deliver.
Continuous 24/7 operation reaches wear limits sooner than occasional operation. Include inspection intervals and a replacement plan for wear parts; for a belt-driven axis, stocking a correctly specified replacement belt can reduce unplanned downtime.

Use the same LOSTPED sheet for every candidate. The table is a decision guide, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s sizing software or catalog calculations.
| Drive type | When it may fit | Questions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Belt | Often considered when long travel, high throughput or a relatively simple drive arrangement is important. | Can the belt deliver the required positioning and repeatability under acceleration? What tension, contamination controls, inspection interval and replacement access are required? |
| Ball screw | Often considered when controlled thrust and positioning behavior are central to the application. | Does the screw meet the required speed, stroke, critical-speed, lubrication and service-life limits? How will the nut and screw be protected from contamination? |
| Linear motor | Often considered when direct-drive response, high acceleration or the absence of mechanical transmission elements is valuable. | Can the motor and guide handle the continuous and peak forces, heat, feedback requirements, cable routing and environmental conditions? |
Compare candidates on speed and acceleration, precision and repeatability, load and thrust, stroke, noise, maintenance, environmental protection, duty-cycle life, installation constraints and total cost of ownership. Published LOSTPED guidance does not establish universal numeric cutoffs; use the current catalog for the exact component and application.
A practical LOSTPED sizing workflow
- Create an application sheet. Enter the seven factors, units, assumptions, payload center of gravity and required service life.
- Build load cases. Calculate guide and drive forces for acceleration, deceleration, steady travel and stops. Include tooling, changing payloads and emergency-stop conditions.
- Resolve orientation and moments. Apply gravity in the correct direction and calculate roll, pitch and yaw moments from load offsets before reading catalog ratings.
- Short-list drive technologies. Compare belt, ball-screw and linear-motor options against speed profile, precision, stroke, thrust, noise and maintenance requirements.
- Check environmental provisions. Select seals, coatings, lubrication and contamination controls, and confirm that cleaning or cleanroom procedures are compatible.
- Estimate life from the duty cycle. Include heat, lubrication intervals and replacement of wear parts. Verify that the predicted life meets the machine’s service requirement.
- Have the complete specification reviewed. Ask a reputable distributor or the manufacturer’s application-engineering department to check the load cases, ratings, controls and total cost of ownership.
Common sizing mistakes to catch before ordering
- Using payload mass as the only load and ignoring acceleration or stopping forces.
- Reading a catalog’s nominal load rating without checking direction, bearing spacing and moments.
- Choosing a drive from maximum speed while omitting cycle time, dwell and reversal frequency.
- Calling a system “accurate” without distinguishing travel accuracy, positioning accuracy and repeatability.
- Specifying a cleanroom or washdown environment after the component has already been selected.
- Assuming an intermittent duty rating will survive continuous operation.
- Leaving overtravel, homing distance and emergency-stop travel out of the stroke requirement.
What to give an application engineer
Send a single, consistent data set: axis orientation and sketch, payload and center of gravity, external forces, guide spacing, stroke, velocity and acceleration profile, cycle and dwell times, precision definitions, ambient conditions, lubrication constraints, required life and stop behavior. This lets the reviewer evaluate the complete system instead of matching one number to one catalog row.
LOSTPED is most useful as a disciplined specification method. It does not replace component-specific calculations, current availability checks or a review of the finished machine’s safety and maintenance requirements.
