Use Cypress’s built-in cy.press(Cypress.Keyboard.Keys.TAB) command to simulate Tab, then query the expected destination and assert that it has focus. Start from a known focus target so the test checks a defined step in the keyboard order.
Press Tab and assert where focus moves
This example focuses the email field, presses Tab, and verifies that the password field receives focus:
it('moves focus to the next form field when pressing Tab', () => {
cy.visit('/my-login')
cy.get('input.email').focus()
cy.press(Cypress.Keyboard.Keys.TAB)
cy.get('input.password').should('have.focus')
})
cy.press() yields null, so do not chain the focus assertion onto it. Make a fresh Cypress query for the element expected to receive focus. Cypress’s cy.press() API documentation uses this focus-order testing pattern.
Use cy.press() for keyboard navigation
Cypress documents cy.press() as triggering native key events in the application. Pass Cypress.Keyboard.Keys.TAB to simulate Tab. Cypress recommends cy.press() for focus management and keyboard navigation; use cy.type() for entering text and its supported text-oriented sequences instead. The cy.type() documentation points to cy.press() for navigation keys such as Tab.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test a longer tab order or a focus trap
For a sequence, repeat the press-and-assert pattern at each meaningful transition. Each assertion should name the element that ought to receive focus next, making an unexpected jump visible at the step where it happens.
cy.get('input.email').focus()
cy.press(Cypress.Keyboard.Keys.TAB)
cy.get('input.password').should('have.focus')
cy.press(Cypress.Keyboard.Keys.TAB)
cy.get('button[type="submit"]').should('have.focus')
Adapt selectors and expected destinations to the page. For a component that intentionally traps focus, test the expected behavior on entry, while moving within the region, and when leaving it. The correct destination depends on the application’s design. Cypress’s accessibility testing guide provides context for testing keyboard navigation and focus behavior.

Check Cypress version compatibility
Cypress lists cy.press() as added in version 14.3.0. Its September 3, 2025 announcement says version 15.1.0 expanded support for named keys and other characters. If the command or key constant is unavailable, check the Cypress version installed in the project and consult the current API documentation alongside the 15.1.0 announcement.
Common problems and fixes
- The command is unavailable: Check whether the project uses Cypress 14.3.0 or later, the version in which Cypress lists
cy.press()as introduced. - The focus assertion is chained to
cy.press(): Since the command yieldsnull, query the expected element separately, then asserthave.focus. - Focus does not go to the expected element: Confirm that the test starts from the intended focused element, and that the expected next destination matches the page’s current focus order and design.
- You are using
cy.type()to navigate: Usecy.press(Cypress.Keyboard.Keys.TAB)for the Tab navigation key; reservecy.type()for text entry and its supported sequences.
Community plugins are alternatives, not prerequisites
The Cypress plugin directory lists cypress-plugin-tab and cypress-real-events as community plugins. The built-in cy.press() covers the documented Tab use case here, so consider a plugin only if the project has a specific requirement it does not meet. The plugin directory distinguishes community extensions from Cypress-maintained official plugins.
