On managed Windows computers, install Chrome without prompts by running the Chrome Enterprise MSI through Windows Installer in quiet mode:
msiexec /i "GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise64.msi" /qn /norestart
Run it from an elevated deployment context. Add a verbose log when diagnosing a failure:
msiexec /i "GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise64.msi" /qn /norestart /L*v "C:WindowsTempChromeInstall.log"
This method is for the Windows MSI. macOS and Linux use their own package and policy-management workflows.
What the silent Chrome command does
msiexec is Windows Installer. The switches in the command control how the Chrome package runs:

| Switch | Purpose |
|---|---|
/i |
Installs the MSI that follows it. |
/qn |
Runs with no Windows Installer user interface. |
/norestart |
Prevents the installer from restarting Windows automatically. |
/L*v |
Writes a verbose installation log to the path that follows it. |
“Silent” means that Windows Installer does not display its normal dialogs. It does not remove operating-system permissions, security controls, or deployment-tool status reporting. Use an administrator or system deployment context so the package can install for the machine rather than depending on an interactive user.
Get the correct Chrome Enterprise MSI
- Download the Chrome Enterprise Bundle or the standalone MSI from Google’s Chrome Enterprise download resources.
- Choose the package architecture that matches the target computers. The example filename,
GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise64.msi, indicates a 64-bit package. - Record the package version and keep the MSI with your deployment files so that the same artifact can be piloted and then rolled out.
Chrome Enterprise is the regular Chrome browser supplied with enterprise deployment and management controls, not a separate consumer browser. Google’s enterprise resources cover Windows, macOS and Linux, but the MSI and msiexec procedure apply to managed Windows installations.
Run a one-machine unattended installation
- Copy the MSI to the computer or to a location reachable by the deployment account.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt, or launch the command from your software-distribution system’s system account.
- Change directory to the MSI location, or use the complete path in quotes if the path contains spaces.
- Run the quiet command with
/norestart. - Wait for the deployment process to report completion. Because
/qnhides dialogs, use your deployment console or the log file rather than waiting for a window.
For a diagnostic run, use:
msiexec /i "C:PackagesGoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise64.msi" /qn /norestart /L*v "C:WindowsTempChromeInstall.log"
Use a directory that the installing account can write to. A log path on a local Windows volume is generally easier to collect than one on a user profile or an unavailable network share.
Check the package before deploying broadly
Do not roll out an older MSI over newer Chrome
Google states that an older Chrome MSI cannot overwrite a newer Chrome version already installed. Compare the package you plan to deploy with the version present in your pilot group first. If the pilot contains a newer browser, replace the deployment package with an appropriate current MSI instead of forcing the older file.

- Use at least one computer without Chrome.
- Use another computer with the supported Chrome version already installed.
- Include the architecture and Windows configurations represented in the intended fleet.
- Confirm that the deployment account can read the MSI and write the log directory.
Do not treat a successful clean install as proof that an upgrade will work; the MSI version rule makes the existing-browser test essential.

Distribute the MSI to a fleet
After the pilot, place the MSI and its deployment settings in the enterprise tool used by your organization. Google specifically lists these distribution mechanisms:
| Method | How the silent command fits | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Active Directory Group Policy Management | Assign or publish the MSI through computer software deployment, using a machine context so installation does not depend on a logged-in user. | Domain-joined Windows fleets managed through Group Policy. |
| Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager | Use the MSI as the application/package source and configure the quiet install command, detection and restart behavior in the deployment type. | Organizations already managing software and compliance in Configuration Manager. |
| HP Client Automation | Use the MSI as the software payload and retain the same quiet switches and logging approach. | HP-managed endpoint environments using that platform. |
Other endpoint platforms may also be able to execute an MSI, but the named Google deployment guidance identifies the tools above. Configure detection and reporting in your chosen platform rather than relying on a visible installer window.
Keep restarts and logging under control
Restart behavior
/norestart prevents an automatic restart from this installation command. That lets your maintenance window or endpoint-management policy decide when a restart is appropriate. It does not guarantee that every Chrome process will close immediately or that a separate operating-system policy will never restart the computer.

Verbose logging
Use /L*v when a deployment is reported as failed, completes without the expected browser, or behaves differently on one device. The log records Windows Installer’s actions and is the first place to look for the failing phase, access problem or package condition. Remove or rotate verbose logs after troubleshooting if your organization treats installer logs as sensitive operational data.
Apply and verify Chrome policies
- Deploy the MSI and allow the machine to complete the installation.
- Open Chrome and navigate to
chrome://policy. - Choose the option to reload policies if your expected entries are not shown.
- Check that the intended policies have values and that their source is the management system you configured.
- If a Group Policy change has not appeared, run
gpupdate /forcein an elevated Command Prompt, then checkchrome://policyagain.
The MSI installs the browser; policy configuration is a separate administrative task. Verify both parts so a browser that is present but unmanaged is not mistaken for a complete deployment.

Common failures and fixes
No window appears, but Chrome is not installed
Quiet mode intentionally suppresses dialogs, so the absence of a window is not a success signal. Re-run with /L*v, confirm the MSI path and inspect the log. Also verify that the deployment account can read the package and has the rights required for a machine installation.
The command says the file cannot be found
Use a fully quoted path, for example:
msiexec /i "C:PackagesGoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise64.msi" /qn /norestart
Check the spelling, drive availability and whether a system-account deployment can reach the same network location. Copying the MSI locally is a useful isolation step.
Recommended Free Tools
An existing newer Chrome blocks installation
Replace the deployment file with a package that is not older than the Chrome version already installed. Google’s deployment guidance explicitly warns that an older MSI cannot overwrite a newer installation.
Group Policy changes do not show in Chrome
Run gpupdate /force, restart Chrome, and revisit chrome://policy. If policies are still absent, verify that the computer is in the intended organizational unit and that the policy is assigned to the computer scope rather than only to a user scope.
The deployment tool reports failure but the browser opens
Use the verbose MSI log and the tool’s detection rule together. A browser window alone does not prove that the intended version, architecture or policy state was installed. Align detection with the package and verify the installed result on the pilot device before changing the fleet-wide rule.

Installation works interactively but not through the deployment system
Compare the two contexts. A system account may not have the same mapped drives, proxy settings, certificate access or network permissions as your administrator account. Use a local package path and a local log path, then test again under the exact deployment context.
Windows, macOS and Linux boundaries
The procedure in this article is specifically for the Windows Chrome Enterprise MSI. Google provides separate download and administration resources for macOS and Linux. Linux policy files for browser applications and extensions are managed through platform-specific locations such as /etc/opt/chrome/policies/managed; that is not an MSI workflow. Do not send the Windows command to a Mac or Linux host and expect it to install Chrome.
Reliability and rollout practices
- Use a pilot ring: start with representative machines, then expand only after installation, upgrade behavior and policy reporting are correct.
- Keep package versions traceable: retain the exact MSI used for the pilot and record which version is approved for production.
- Separate installation from policy validation: check the browser version and
chrome://policyindependently. - Prefer controlled maintenance windows: combine
/norestartwith your endpoint tool’s restart and user-notification rules. - Collect logs only when useful: enable verbose logging for failures or pilot diagnostics, and store logs where the deployment account can write them.
This approach reduces surprises from version mismatches, hidden prompts and policy timing while preserving the unattended behavior required for fleet deployment.

Does Chrome Enterprise install a different browser than consumer Chrome?
No. Google describes Chrome Enterprise as the same Chrome browser with enterprise deployment and management controls.
Where should I look when a silent install gives no useful on-screen feedback?
Run the command with /L*v and inspect the resulting Windows Installer log; quiet mode deliberately hides installer dialogs.
