These settings manage ringing and notifications; they do not make your phone unreachable to the cellular network. If you mean callers should hear that your line is unavailable, the official guidance below does not establish a way to do that while allowing chosen contacts’ calls through.
Choose the control that matches what you mean by “unreachable”
Focus and Do Not Disturb (DND) filter interruptions on your phone. You can allow selected people to call while silencing others, without blocking the allowed contacts. That is different from disconnecting cellular service or making every other caller hear an unavailable-line message.

Allow selected contacts through Focus on iPhone
- Open Settings > Focus.
- Choose Do Not Disturb or another Focus mode.
- Open People or Choose People, then select Allow Notifications From.
- Add the contacts you want to be able to reach you. If the available call options include groups or repeat callers, choose the exceptions that suit you.
Apple documents an option for repeated calls: two or more calls from the same person within three minutes can be allowed through. You can also configure Focus to silence selected people and separately decide whether calls from people you silence are allowed. The exact choices depend on the Focus settings shown on your iPhone. Apple’s iPhone Focus guide describes these controls.
Make one critical contact audible even when alerts are silenced
If a particular person must be able to make sounds and vibrations even when the iPhone or notifications are silenced, use Emergency Bypass for that contact’s ringtone or text tone. Open the contact, choose Edit, open Ringtone or Text Tone, and enable Emergency Bypass. This is a stronger, contact-specific alert exception than simply permitting a notification through Focus.

Allow selected contacts through Do Not Disturb on Android
- Open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb.
- Open Notification filters > People.
- Choose which calls or messages to allow or block, then set the people or categories you want to get through.
- If you want an exception for repeat callers, turn on Allow repeat callers if that option is available.
Google documents repeat callers as a second call from the same person within 15 minutes. Google’s Android Help describes Modes as a way to silence a device and manage when and how you are notified. Some instructions require Android 14 or later, and Android menus vary by device manufacturer. If the labels do not match, check your manufacturer’s instructions or device help. Google’s guide to Modes and Do Not Disturb gives the documented route.
Handle unknown callers separately on iPhone
If your main problem is calls from numbers that are not saved in Contacts, iPhone call screening provides a different control from Focus. Depending on the option you choose, the phone can ask a caller for more information before ringing, or silence calls from unsaved numbers and send them to voicemail while showing them in Recents. This does not create a hand-picked allowlist of contacts through Focus; configure Focus separately if you want specific people to interrupt you. What callers experience—and what these settings do not promise
A silenced or filtered call is not proof that your phone is unreachable on the mobile network. Apple and Google describe controls for interruptions, calls, and notifications; their cited support guidance does not describe disconnecting cellular service while keeping selected callers connected. If your goal is simply to avoid ringing or alerts from most people, Focus or DND is the appropriate setting. If you need callers to receive an unavailable-line response, do not assume these filters will provide it.
Menu names and available options can differ by operating-system version and Android device. Check the settings on your phone and use its current support guide if a menu is missing or labeled differently.
