You normally do not scan a QR code to sign in to Outlook on an iPhone or Android phone. Open Outlook, add or select your account, enter your email address, and follow the sign-in and verification prompts. A QR code you encounter may instead help download Outlook or enroll Microsoft Authenticator.
How to sign in to Outlook on your phone
Microsoft’s standard setup instructions have you add the account in Outlook and authenticate through the prompts—not scan a QR code as the Outlook sign-in step. The labels and order can vary by app version and account configuration.

On iPhone
- Open Outlook for iOS.
- Choose Add Account to add an existing account, or select the relevant option if Outlook detects an account already on your device.
- Enter or confirm the email address, then follow the authentication prompts.
- If asked, complete multi-factor verification. A work or school account may also require organization-specific registration or device-protection steps.
Microsoft’s general iOS setup instructions are at Set up email in the Outlook for iOS app.
On Android
- Open Outlook for Android and start adding an account.
- Confirm a detected account or enter the email address you want to add.
- Follow the sign-in and verification prompts. Work or school accounts may require additional registration steps set by the organization.
The same Microsoft setup guidance covers the general account-addition process; it does not establish one universal sequence for every account.

What the QR code is for
Check which page or setup process displayed the code. A QR code for installing Outlook and one for registering a security method have different purposes and are not interchangeable.
| QR code purpose | Where it appears | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Download Outlook | Microsoft’s iOS setup page | Use it to get the Outlook mobile app. Then open Outlook and add your account. |
| Register Microsoft Authenticator | A security-registration flow on another device or sign-in page | Open Microsoft Authenticator on your phone, start its add-account flow, choose the correct account type, and scan the displayed code. |
Microsoft identifies its iOS-page QR code as a download link in its Outlook for iOS setup instructions. For security enrollment, follow Microsoft’s Authenticator app setup instructions. If scanning fails, Microsoft documents manual code entry as an alternative. Allow camera access if Authenticator requests it.

Can Outlook mobile approve a sign-in?
In supported configurations, Outlook mobile can receive sign-in approval notifications or provide a one-time passcode. That is a separate sign-in method, not scanning a QR code to sign into Outlook. Availability and app-version requirements differ by platform and flow; some personal-account support is limited by platform, and users who already have Authenticator may be directed to use it. Check Microsoft’s current guidance for the account type and method you are setting up: Use Outlook mobile to sign in and Sign in with Outlook for iOS or Android.

- Personal Microsoft account: Use Microsoft’s sign-in helper to identify account-specific issues.
- Work or school account: If your organization enables self-service password reset, use that option. Otherwise contact your IT administrator, who can explain required verification or registration steps.
- Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, or another provider: Contact that email provider about account sign-in problems.
- Repeated password prompts: Microsoft advises installing the latest app version if recurring prompts started after app security standards were updated.
- Authenticator QR scan fails: Use the manual-entry option in Microsoft’s enrollment flow if available.
