For a signature request from someone else, use its signing link instead of marking up a copy: request workflows can assign fields and keep an audit trail. A visible signature is not the same as a certificate-based digital signature, which can support identity and document-integrity checks.
Choose the right way to sign

Sign a PDF online or on a computer
- Open a trusted PDF signing tool or the PDF app you already use. For Adobe’s documented web workflow, go to Adobe Acrobat online, choose E-Sign, then Fill & Sign, and select or upload the PDF.
- Create the signature using a supported option: type it, draw it, or select an image. Place it on the intended signature line and resize it. Complete any requested name, date, or other fields.
- Save or download the signed PDF. Adobe says its tool embeds the signature and accompanying text in the PDF.
- Reopen the saved file. Check that the signature is in the right place, the text remains legible, and you have the copy you intend to send.
Sign a PDF on an iPhone or iPad
Adobe’s iOS workflow supports drawing a signature, selecting an existing image, or capturing one with the camera. Its documented steps are:
- Open an eligible PDF in Acrobat for iOS.
- Tap Edit > Fill & Sign > Sign.
- Draw the signature, choose an image, or use the camera to capture it, then tap Done.
- Place the signature on the document and resize it as needed.
- Review the placement, then save the PDF.
Shared, view-only, review, or secured files can restrict signing. Adobe also says a signature cannot be removed after the saved PDF is flattened. Check placement before finalizing, and keep an unmodified copy if you may need to correct the document.
Sign a document someone sent for signature
A signature request is different from signing your own copy. The sender sets up the request and assigns fields; follow the request link so the completed document is associated with that workflow.

Google Drive eSignature request
- Open the email link or the PDF request in Drive.
- Complete the fields assigned to you and type or draw your signature.
- Mark the request complete and confirm the finished PDF is saved.
Google documents requests for up to 10 signers. During an active request, its PDF is locked; edits require the requester to cancel and send a new request from the updated source. The completed PDF includes an audit-trail page with events and timestamps. Availability depends on account and workspace eligibility; check Google’s Drive eSignature Help for current details.
Adobe Acrobat Sign request
A requester can send a document through Acrobat Sign. Adobe says recipients can sign through a browser or mobile device without an Acrobat subscription. Use the link in the request and complete the assigned signing steps rather than marking up a detached copy. See Adobe’s e-signatures overview.

Electronic signature or certificate-based digital signature?
Typing your name, drawing a mark, or placing a signature image creates a visible electronic signature. That appearance alone does not prove who signed or prevent later alteration. A certificate-based digital signature uses a certificate ID and can help a recipient verify signer identity and document integrity; Adobe states, “Certificate-based signatures provide both of these security services.” Adobe Acrobat Help: About certificate signatures.
Some transactions may call for advanced or qualified signatures under frameworks such as the EU’s eIDAS regulation or ETSI PAdES. A standard typed or drawn mark does not automatically meet those requirements. Ask the recipient which method, certificate issuer, and format they accept before signing.

Check the document, privacy, and requirements before sending
- Review the full PDF first. Confirm all fields are complete and the signature belongs on the intended page and line before saving or submitting.
- Use the right copy. Keep an original when you might need to correct a flattened signature. For a request workflow, do not edit the locked active PDF; the requester may need to update the source and send a new request.
- Think about sensitive content. A browser-based signing workflow may require uploading the PDF to a service. Use a service you trust and consider the document’s confidentiality before upload.
- Check what the recipient actually needs. Legal effect and required assurance vary by jurisdiction, document, and transaction. Product help does not establish that every signing method is legally sufficient for every use; confirm the applicable requirement with the recipient or an appropriate legal authority.
