To shut down Windows 10 or Windows 11 with a keyboard, press Windows key + D, then Alt + F4, choose Shut down, and confirm. To put the PC to sleep, use the same route and select Sleep if it appears; available power options vary by PC.

Shut down or sleep from the keyboard
- Press Windows key + D to show the desktop.
- Press Alt + F4.
- Choose Shut down or, if available, Sleep.
- Confirm your choice.
Alt + F4 acts on the active item. If an app window is focused, it may close that app instead of opening the power dialog. Showing the desktop first takes you to the desktop-focused route.
The dialog’s available actions depend on your PC and its configuration. Microsoft Support says Sleep uses very little power and lets the PC start up faster so you can return to where you left off.
Other ways to reach power options
Use the Quick Link menu
Press Windows key + X to open the Quick Link menu. Follow the menu labels to find Shut down or sign out and the power action you want. Do not assume every PC presents the same choices.

Configure the power button or laptop lid
Many PCs can be configured to sleep when you press the power button, and laptops may offer a setting to sleep when the lid closes. The available settings depend on the device. Check your PC’s power options for the controls it provides.
