To show upcoming events on a WordPress page or homepage, add an events block or shortcode that draws from your event source. If your events are managed in The Events Calendar, install The Events Calendar Shortcode & Block alongside it, then add the block or [ecs-list-events]. For an external iCalendar feed on WordPress.com, the documented Upcoming Events widget is a legacy option for classic themes; block-theme users should use an available calendar embed or a plugin their plan supports.
Choose the method that matches your event source
Start by identifying where the events are maintained and where you want visitors to see them. A WordPress event plugin, an iCalendar feed, and a calendar view are different setups; the right insertion method depends on both your source and your site’s theme, plan, and installed plugin versions.
- Events managed by The Events Calendar: use its Shortcode & Block extension to place a list in page or post content, or in a supported widget area.
- Events managed by The Events Calendar, with a future-only filter: consider an extension whose documented shortcode supports future events.
- Events in an iCalendar feed on WordPress.com: use the Upcoming Events widget if your site uses a classic theme; for a block theme, follow WordPress.com’s embed or plugin guidance.
- A calendar view rather than a list: check the selected extension’s tier and The Events Calendar’s own embed documentation before choosing a shortcode.
Show an event list with The Events Calendar Shortcode & Block
This route requires both The Events Calendar and The Events Calendar Shortcode & Block. The extension adds a block, and its listing also documents shortcode placement in posts, pages, and widgets. Use the block editor’s inserter to add the extension’s block where the list should appear, or insert the shortcode in a suitable content or widget area.
Insert a basic list
The simplest documented shortcode is:
[ecs-list-events]
Filter and limit the results
The extension documents controls including category, result count, ordering, event details, and a future window using a days setting. For example, its listing shows this category-and-count form:

Display an iCalendar feed on WordPress.com
If your events are maintained outside WordPress, WordPress.com’s Upcoming Events legacy widget guide describes a widget and shortcode that use an iCalendar link to display a list. The guide is specifically for classic themes.
For block themes, WordPress.com points users to Eventbrite or Google Calendar embeds, or to plugins on plans that allow plugin installation. Confirm that your plan supports the method you choose and that the feed or embed is available from your calendar service.

Use The Events Calendar’s own calendar embed or widget
The Events Calendar documents a [tribe_events] shortcode for embedding calendar views in different locations on a site. Its knowledge base also describes a maximum-event-count setting for its widget and shortcode-based embedding. Review the current vendor instructions for your plugin version and site setup before applying a particular example, especially if it is version-specific.

Place the list where visitors need it
For a homepage or another main content area, add the block or shortcode to that page. For a sidebar or footer, use the relevant widget area if your theme and extension support it. Shortcode support can differ between content, widgets, and themes, so preview the result in the actual location rather than assuming a shortcode that works in a page will also render in every widget area.
Quick Recap
Check the result before publishing
- Confirm that the list contains events from the intended source and only the date range you want.
- Check category, ordering, result limit, and event details against the shortcode or block settings.
- Open the page on the front end to make sure the block or shortcode renders instead of appearing as text.
- Verify that the display works in its intended location and on the site’s current theme and plugin versions.
- If you need a calendar layout, confirm that the selected extension and plan include it.
