To show a changing track label in your YouTube stream, add an overlay to the video you send from OBS or compatible streaming software. The overlay needs both a source of current-track metadata and a visual layer in the outgoing stream. Choose an integration that matches the app actually playing your music; YouTube’s broadcast title and description do not create an on-screen label that changes with each song.

Choose the method that matches your music player

The best route depends on where playback happens. A VLC script is the documented fit for local files playing through a VLC Video Source. YTMDesktop2 provides a documented local API-to-OBS Browser Source route when playback is running through that app. Neither should be assumed to read every music player or a YouTube browser tab.

Playback source Overlay route Requirements and metadata behavior Display options
Local files in a VLC Video Source OBS script reads VLC metadata and can export the current song to a text file for an OBS text source. The cited OBS resource lists Linux, OBS 27.0 or higher with Python scripting enabled, and Python 3. Mutagen is optional and recommended for better metadata reading. If tags are missing, the script can fall back to the filename. Use a format such as title followed by artist; display the exported text in OBS.
Playback in YTMDesktop2 Enable the app’s local API, copy its OBS URL, and add it as an OBS Browser Source. Works with playback through YTMDesktop2, not arbitrary players. If API authentication is enabled, the URL requires the paired client token; keep that private. Documented layouts include full or compact card, title-and-artist text, badge, fullscreen artwork, vertical stack, and ticker. Artwork, title, artist, and progress can be toggled.
Another player or metadata workflow Investigate a compatible integration, such as the OBS “What’s Now Playing” resource. Its update history describes MusicBrainz support and fallback, templates, artwork, and handling for some metadata edge cases. That history is not a complete current setup guide; check current compatibility and instructions before relying on it. Features and setup depend on the current version and the playback source; confirm them in its current documentation.

Set up a VLC track label in OBS

This route is for local media playing through a VLC Video Source. Accurate tags make a more useful label than relying on filenames.

  1. Check the file metadata. Confirm that the local music files have the title and artist tags you want shown. The script may fall back to a filename when tags are absent.
  2. Confirm the environment. The OBS resource lists Linux, OBS 27.0 or higher with Python scripting enabled, and Python 3 as requirements. Mutagen is optional and recommended for improved metadata reading.
  3. Use the VLC-aware OBS script. The script detects the current song from a VLC Video Source and reads title, artist, and album tags. Configure a text format such as {title} - {artist} if that is the display you want.
  4. Choose how OBS receives the text. The script can export the current song to a text file. Add that file as an OBS text source and position it over the video. Alternatively, use the script’s supported display method as described in its resource instructions.
  5. Check real transitions. Play tracks with long titles and tracks with incomplete tags. Confirm the displayed text updates on a track change and remains legible against the video.

Set up YTMDesktop2 as an OBS Browser Source

Use this route only when the music is playing in YTMDesktop2. Its documented integration uses the app’s local API to provide the overlay page for OBS.

  1. Enable the API in YTMDesktop2. Follow the app’s current API instructions; the integration depends on playback and metadata coming from this app.
  2. Open the app’s OBS settings and copy its OBS URL. The documentation describes this URL as the address OBS will load for the overlay. If API authentication is enabled, use the paired client token required by the URL.
  3. Add it in OBS. In the Sources panel, select + → Browser, create the source, and enter the copied OBS URL in its URL field. Set its dimensions and position to fit the stream canvas, then confirm the source is visible.
  4. Choose a layout and content. Select a suitable documented layout—such as compact card, title-and-artist text, or ticker—and toggle artwork, title, artist, and progress according to the available settings.
  5. Test before leaving the stream unattended. Check a track change, a long title, and the overlay after restarting the player or OBS. Do not expose a private client token in a public page, screenshot, or shared configuration.

Make the label readable and dependable

  • Show title and artist first; use a compact text or ticker layout when the video has limited free space.
  • Test long track names, missing tags, and changes between tracks. A VLC filename fallback may not look like a clean title, while the YTMDesktop2 overlay depends on metadata supplied by that app.
  • For a 24/7 setup, check the overlay after track transitions and after restarting the player or OBS. The documented integrations describe metadata and display capabilities, but do not establish long-duration uptime, recovery, timing, or reliability.
  • If the chosen integration does not recognize your playback app, identify that exact source and look for a current compatible bridge. The documented routes do not establish a universal metadata connector.

Why changing the YouTube title is not enough

YouTube broadcast title and description are metadata for the live video; changing them does not render a track label over the picture. Google for Developers describes the API distinction: “A liveBroadcast resource represents an event that will be streamed, via live video, on YouTube.” To show the current song visibly in the stream, include the label in the outgoing picture as an OBS overlay.

Copyright and channel considerations

A now-playing label only displays metadata; it does not grant permission to stream the music. Confirm that you have the rights or other authorization needed for each recording before using it in a public live stream. Metadata accuracy, copyright permission, and YouTube’s channel rules are separate concerns.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed. This is a different setup from adding a changing OBS overlay, so use the player-specific methods above when the label itself is the task.
