Run ip link show to list the network interfaces visible to your Linux system and see their link state. To show only interfaces marked as running, use ip link show up. If you need assigned IP addresses rather than a link inventory, use ip addr.
List network interfaces and check their state
At a terminal, run:
ip link showThe ip-link(8) manual describes this as showing “the state of all network interfaces on the system.” The output includes interface names and link information. Names vary by machine and configuration, so an example such as eth0 is not guaranteed to appear.
The command reports interfaces visible in the network namespace where it runs. A container or another network namespace can therefore show a different set of interfaces from the host.
Show only running interfaces
Use the up filter:
ip link show upThis displays only interfaces marked as running. “Running” describes the interface state; it does not prove that internet access is working.

Show one interface
Pass a device name to inspect a particular interface:
ip link show dev eth0Replace eth0 with a name from your system’s output.

Understand what “available” means
“Available” can mean that an interface is present, administratively enabled, or operationally usable. ip link show is the right first inventory command, but its state alone does not establish that a machine can reach the internet. For address information, inspect ip addr; for a connectivity problem, use a route or connectivity diagnostic that matches the issue.
Why use ip link instead of ifconfig?
For link-layer details, prefer ip link over relying on legacy ifconfig. The ifconfig(8) manual recommends ip link for displaying link-layer information, including hardware addresses, and notes an ioctl-based limitation when retrieving hardware addresses longer than eight bytes.
