Because complete runs after either the success or error callback, the indicator will not stay stuck if the request fails.
Show a loader for one jQuery AJAX request
Place the loader beside the results or component that is waiting, and hide it when the page first loads. Then use request-level callbacks to control it:

</script>beforeSend is the request-level callback for work immediately before the request is sent. Use complete for cleanup rather than hiding the loader only in success: jQuery calls complete whether the request succeeds or fails, and after the success or error callback. See the jQuery.ajax() callback documentation.
Choose local or page-wide loading behavior
Use local callbacks when only one component should display a loading state. If the indicator represents all relevant jQuery AJAX activity across the page, use document-level global events instead:

});ajaxStart fires when an AJAX request starts and no other AJAX requests are running. ajaxStop fires when no requests remain, so a shared loader stays visible while overlapping requests are still active. Requests configured with global: false do not trigger these global events. The lifecycle behavior is described in the jQuery Ajax Events documentation.

Make the loading state accessible
Do not rely on an animated GIF alone to communicate that content is loading. Include readable text such as “Loading results” and expose it as a status message so assistive technology can determine the update without moving focus. WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 4.1.3 covers status messages; see the W3C explanation of Status Messages. If adjacent text already conveys the status, the decorative GIF can use empty alternative text, as in the example.

Keep the indicator near the content that is waiting. Avoid a large loader that shifts unrelated content; reserving its space can prevent that movement. If very fast requests cause a distracting flash, you may delay showing the indicator as a presentation choice, not a technical requirement.
Handle failures and keep requests asynchronous
- Loader remains visible after an error: Put cleanup in
complete, not only insuccess. - Shared loader disappears too soon: Do not have every overlapping request hide the same loader on its own completion. Use the global events for page-wide jQuery activity, or track active requests per component.
- Browser appears frozen: Avoid
async: false. jQuery requests are asynchronous by default; its documentation warns that synchronous requests can temporarily lock the browser and disable actions, and synchronous jqXHR use has been deprecated since jQuery 1.8. See jQuery.ajax() request options.
Using Fetch instead of jQuery
Fetch does not use jQuery’s AJAX callbacks. Show the loader before the request and hide it in a finally block so cleanup runs on either outcome. Check response.ok because an HTTP error status does not, by itself, reject the Fetch promise:
