For steadier handheld video, build a secure stance, support both the camera and lens, and keep movements deliberate. Then set frame rate and shutter speed for the motion you want, and choose stabilization with its tradeoffs in mind. These techniques reduce avoidable shake, but they cannot make walking footage perfectly smooth.
How to hold a compact full-frame camera steadily
Start by making your body a stable base. Nikon’s video-shooting guidance recommends standing with your feet slightly apart, keeping your elbows close to your body, and holding the grip with one hand while cradling the camera with the other.
- Support the lens from underneath with your free hand; avoid letting it hang unsupported.
- Breathe naturally and avoid sudden starts, stops, or changes in direction.
- If the camera has a neck strap, pull it taut while holding the camera in front of you. The strap adds a point of tension.
- When practical, lean against a wall, fence, or other stable structure for another contact point.
These habits help reduce small movements; they are not a guarantee of shake-free footage.
Compose first, then decide whether to move
Before recording, check the subject, background, and light. Often, a still frame with action happening inside it communicates more clearly than a camera move added without a purpose. Fujifilm’s video guide also emphasizes making camera movement intentional.

If a pan or other move reveals something important, give it a clear beginning and endpoint, and make it slowly. A slow, deliberate move is easier to watch and control than a hurried one. For a pan or tilt you want to keep consistent, a tripod with a fluid head can help; it trades the freedom of handheld shooting for more controlled movement.
Choose frame rate and shutter speed together
Frame rate affects how motion appears. As practical examples, 24 frames per second (fps) is often used for a film-style look, 25 fps is common in the UK and Europe, and 30 fps is common online. Recording at 50 or 60 fps can provide footage for slow motion when played back at a lower frame rate. These are options, not universal delivery rules; choose based on your project and where it will be viewed.

A useful starting convention for ordinary-speed footage is a shutter speed around twice the frame rate:
| Recording frame rate | Starting shutter speed | Typical intent |
|---|---|---|
| 24 or 25 fps | About 1/50 sec | Ordinary-speed motion |
| 30 fps | About 1/60 sec | Ordinary-speed motion |
| 50 or 60 fps | Use a faster shutter than for ordinary-speed footage | Slow motion when played back at a lower frame rate |
This is a starting point, not a strict rule. A much faster shutter can make movement look harsh or staccato; a slower shutter can add excessive blur. If you are shooting at a high frame rate for slow motion, adjust the shutter to suit that motion rendering rather than automatically using the ordinary-speed settings.

Fujifilm’s X-H2 movie-settings guide notes that 25/50 fps may suit European contexts and 30/59.94 fps may suit US contexts because lighting can flicker at local power frequencies. Flicker depends on the light source and camera settings, so this is a useful regional consideration—not a guarantee that a particular frame rate will eliminate it.
Understand what each stabilization mode does
Stabilization systems compensate for movement in different ways. The names and available settings vary by camera, and some bodies combine more than one approach.

| Type | How it works | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| IBIS | In-body image stabilization moves the image sensor to compensate for camera movement. | Availability and behavior depend on the camera body. |
| OIS | Optical image stabilization moves an element in the lens. | It requires a compatible stabilized lens and camera setup. |
| DIS | Digital image stabilization analyzes footage and stabilizes it in processing. | It can crop the image, narrowing the field of view. |
When you are standing still, stabilization can help reduce small movements. Some cameras offer a boost or enhanced mode intended for static handheld framing; its behavior during a pan can differ. Consult the manual for your specific body, and check the movie stabilization menu rather than assuming the still-photo setting works the same way. Fujifilm’s video guide explains stabilization as a camera-specific choice, not a universal setting.

A wide-angle view includes more of the surroundings, which can suit interiors, travel, and landscapes. A longer focal length frames a tighter view and can separate a subject from its background. Aperture affects depth of field too: a wider aperture leaves less of the scene in focus, while stopping down keeps more in focus.

For handheld movement, a wider view can make small angular movements less conspicuous than a tight view. That is a practical optical inference, not a promise that a wide lens will stabilize footage. A compatible lens with optical stabilization may also help, but check compatibility and the camera’s stated behavior before relying on it. Choose the field of view and working distance that fit the scene.
When a monopod or tripod makes sense
Extra support is optional, not a prerequisite for handheld video. The right choice depends on how much mobility and control the shot requires.
| Approach | Useful for | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld | Moving freely and changing position quickly. | Small movements and operator fatigue can affect a long take. |
| Monopod | Longer takes, a mostly fixed position, or reducing fatigue while retaining some movement. | It steadies the camera but does not lock it in place like a tripod. |
| Tripod with a fluid head | A locked-off shot or controlled pan and tilt. | It takes more setup and limits quick repositioning. |
Nikon recommends matching tripod capacity to the camera’s weight and using a fluid head for smoother pans and tilts. A video monopod is another option when you want support without giving up all movement.
Check the specific camera before choosing settings
Compact full-frame cameras differ in body shape and mass, available stabilization modes, lens compatibility, crop behavior, supported frame rates, and firmware. There is no universal menu path or stabilization setting that applies to every brand. Use the camera’s manual to confirm the exact movie settings, what each mode does, and whether a digital-stabilization crop changes your framing.
