To share your screen on a live stream, either use YouTube Live Control Room’s built-in sharing during a webcam-based stream, or add a display/window capture source in OBS Studio. Use YouTube’s option for a simple share; choose OBS when you need a composed layout, multiple sources, or more control over audio. Before presenting, check the preview, audio, and anything private that could appear onscreen.
Choose a screen-sharing method
| Method | Best suited to | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live Control Room | A straightforward screen, window, or browser-tab share | You must start through Live Control Room with a connected webcam and microphone. Supported browser-tab audio is shared by default. |
| OBS Studio | A stream with multiple sources, overlays, or deliberate audio mixing | Add capture sources to a scene, configure audio, and send the encoder output to YouTube using its server URL and stream key. |
This is a practical comparison of the documented features, not a performance comparison. YouTube’s built-in route has fewer composition controls; OBS gives you scenes and sources to arrange your output.
Share your screen with OBS Studio
1. Configure OBS and your scene
- Open OBS Studio and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. It takes your hardware and network conditions into account when configuring OBS.
- In the Scenes panel, select or create the scene you want to use. In Sources, add the capture source for what viewers should see.
- For a whole display, use Display Capture on Windows, Linux, or macOS 12.6 and earlier. On macOS 13, OBS directs users to macOS Screen Capture.
- For one application, use Window Capture on Windows, Linux, or macOS 12.6 and earlier. On macOS 13, use macOS Screen Capture.
- Arrange and size the source in the preview. Confirm that the preview shows the intended display or window, not a different monitor or application.
OBS’s Sources Guide describes sources for displays, windows, cameras, and audio. Game Capture is a Windows-only source for hardware-accelerated games; it is not the general choice for a browser or ordinary application.
2. Set up microphone and application audio
- Watch the Audio Mixer meters while speaking and while playing any sound you want viewers to hear. OBS captures desktop audio and microphone by default, but check that the expected meters respond.
- If a meter does not move or the wrong device is selected, open Settings → Audio and choose the intended input device.
- For application-specific capture, OBS documents Application Audio Capture for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. OBS 30.1 added an option to include audio with Window Capture or Game Capture sources.
- If you use separate Application Audio Capture sources, disable the global Desktop Audio source to avoid capturing the same sound twice and creating echo.
Audio capture controls can depend on your operating system and OBS version. If the application’s audio is not available through your setup, verify your source selection and test before going live rather than assuming the video capture includes sound.

3. Connect OBS to YouTube and test
- In YouTube Live Control Room, get the stream server URL and stream key for your broadcast.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the server and stream key as prompted.
- Treat the stream key as private account access information. Do not show it in a screen share or publish it.
- Start a short test recording or stream. Check the picture, microphone, and any application audio before the real broadcast.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes instead of going straight into a first broadcast. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe entering the Live server URL and stream key in streaming software.
Share your screen in YouTube Live Control Room
- Connect a webcam and microphone, then start your stream through YouTube Live Control Room using the webcam flow.
- Choose the screen-sharing control and select an entire screen, a window, or a browser tab.
- If you are sharing a supported browser tab, its audio is shared by default. Confirm the right tab and sound are selected before continuing.
- When finished, stop sharing in Live Control Room or use the browser’s stop-sharing control.
YouTube documents this built-in route as a webcam-based screen share, so a webcam and microphone must be connected. See YouTube’s webcam streaming instructions.

Preflight: prevent a bad or accidental share
- Confirm the preview shows the intended monitor, window, or tab.
- Check the microphone meter and, separately, whether the application audio you need is reaching the stream.
- Close or hide unrelated private windows, messages, and notifications before sharing a full display.
- Keep credentials, account details, and the YouTube stream key offscreen.
- Make a short test recording or stream and review what viewers will see and hear.
- Check that you have the right to show any music, video, or other copyrighted material. A screen share does not itself grant permission to rebroadcast it.
Troubleshoot common screen-share problems
The wrong screen or application appears
Check the selected capture source and the OBS preview, or reselect the intended display, window, or tab in YouTube’s sharing picker. If you have more than one display, verify which one the source is capturing before going live.
Viewers can see the screen but cannot hear the app
Check the Audio Mixer meters and the selected device under Settings → Audio. Application-specific capture depends on the Windows and OBS versions noted above; in YouTube’s built-in route, tab audio is shared by default only for a supported browser tab.

The audio echoes or sounds doubled
Look for duplicate capture of the same audio. If using separate Application Audio Capture sources in OBS, disable global Desktop Audio as OBS advises.
The YouTube stream does not receive the OBS output
Verify that OBS is configured with the YouTube Live server URL and the stream key for the intended broadcast. Keep the key private; if you suspect it has been exposed, use YouTube’s account controls to replace it before streaming again.
