To share a digitally purchased PS4 game with another user on the same console, sign in to the account that bought it and activate that PS4 as the account’s primary console. Then switch back to the other local user and launch the game. Sony says anyone using a primary PS4 can use applications purchased from PlayStation Store.
Activate the PS4 from the account that bought the game
- On the PS4, sign in to the account that purchased the digital game.
- Open Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4.
- Select Activate. Sony says a first PS4 may be activated automatically. If another PS4 is already primary for this account, deactivate that console before activating this one. See Sony’s primary PS4 activation guide.
- Return to the other local user account and open the game. The purchase remains attached to the account that bought it; primary activation lets other users of that console use the purchased Store application.
If the game belongs to a different account
The purchase owner’s activation is what matters. If another person’s account bought the game, that account—not the account trying to play it—must activate this PS4 as its primary console. Sony allows one primary PS4 per account.
Switching from an old PS4
If you can access the old console, deactivate it there before activating the new one. If you cannot reach it, Sony provides remote deactivation of all devices through Account Management; its activation guide says remote deactivation is available once every six months.
Purchased games and PlayStation Plus are different
Primary-console activation shares access to purchased Store applications; it does not transfer ownership of a purchase. Some PlayStation Plus benefits can also be shared on the primary PS4, but the shared benefits are limited. Sony lists online multiplayer (subject to parental-control settings), downloaded Monthly Plus games, qualifying games bought with a Plus discount, and catalog games depending on the membership plan. The other user cannot redeem Plus games, use online storage, enable automatic patch downloads, buy products at Plus-discounted prices, or access early time-limited trials. If another user sees a lock or cannot start the game
- Confirm that the account that purchased the game is signed in and has activated this PS4 as its primary console.
- Confirm that the game was purchased by that account. A different local user’s purchase requires that purchasing account’s activation.
- If those checks do not resolve the problem, contact PlayStation Support about the account or licensing error rather than changing unrelated settings.
Keep account credentials private
Sharing access to a game does not require handing another person the purchasing account’s sign-in details. Sony advises users: “Never share your account details with anyone else.” See Sony’s Account & Security guidance.
