Proton Pass Secure Links let you share one password, payment card, note, or other saved item with someone who does not have a Proton Pass account. You can set a link to expire after one hour to 30 days, limit how many times it can be opened, and revoke it from a dashboard. For ongoing collaboration with other Proton Pass users, use item or vault sharing instead.

What Proton Pass Secure Links do

Proton announced Secure Links on July 12, 2024. A Secure Link shares one saved item through a unique URL, so the recipient does not need a Proton Pass account. Supported examples include logins, bank cards, and secure notes. Proton says the link is end-to-end encrypted: the decryption key is stored in the URL fragment and is not sent to Proton’s servers. Proton’s announcement describes the launch and its controls.

The link is intended for temporary sharing, not a shared, continuously updated workspace. You choose its lifetime and view limit when creating it, and can remove it when access is no longer needed.

Share an item with someone who does not use Proton Pass

  1. Open Proton Pass and select the password, card, note, or other item you want to share.
  2. Choose Share, then create a Secure Link for a recipient who is not using Proton Pass.
  3. Set an expiration between one hour and 30 days, and choose the maximum number of views.
  4. Copy the generated link and send it to the recipient using a channel you trust.
  5. When sharing is finished, remove the link from the Secure Links dashboard to revoke access before its expiration.

Anyone who obtains a usable link may be able to open it until its view limit is reached or it expires. Treat the link like a secret: send it only to the intended recipient, and avoid placing it somewhere public. Proton’s password-sharing guide explains its sharing workflows and plan distinctions.

Choose the right sharing method

Method Best for Recipient account Access and controls
Secure Link Temporarily sharing one item Not required Set an expiration from one hour through 30 days, limit views, or revoke the link.
Single-item sharing Ongoing access to one item Invited Proton Pass user Share with an invited user; authorized changes synchronize. Proton’s guide says this feature requires Pass Plus or Professional.
Vault sharing Ongoing collaboration across a group of items Proton Pass users invited to the vault Set view, edit, or admin permissions; changes synchronize, and access can be revoked. The free plan supports vault sharing with limits; check Proton’s guide for current limits.

These options are not interchangeable. A Secure Link is a time- and view-limited route for a recipient outside Pass; item or vault sharing is designed for continued collaboration among Pass users. To start either Pass-user workflow, select the item or vault and invite the person by email, then assign the available access level.

What Proton says about encryption

Proton says Secure Links use end-to-end encryption and that the decryption key stays in the URL fragment rather than being sent to its servers. Its security documentation also describes open-source apps, independent audits, 256-bit AES-GCM vault encryption, and OpenPGP with ECC Curve25519. Those are vendor-documented security measures, not evidence of an independent comparison proving one password manager safer than another. See Proton Pass security information for the company’s technical details.

When to revoke a link

Delete a Secure Link from the dashboard when the recipient no longer needs access, when you sent it to the wrong person, or if you suspect it has been exposed. A configured expiration or view cap reduces how long or how often a link can be used; revoking it ends access sooner. For a Pass-user item or vault share, revoke the invited person’s access when the collaboration ends.
