Netflix’s password-free option for someone who lives outside your Netflix Household is an Extra Member slot: the invitee gets their own account and password, while the account owner manages and pays for the slot. If that option is unavailable, the person can create a separate account and may be able to transfer an eligible profile. Netflix says an account may not be shared outside its defined Household; temporary verification codes are not a permanent workaround.
What Netflix allows outside your Household
Netflix defines a Household as the devices connected to the internet at the main place where the account holder watches Netflix. It uses the internet connection, device IDs, and account activity to establish the Household, and says it does not collect GPS data to pinpoint devices. Its rule is: “You may not share your Netflix account outside of your household.” People who live elsewhere need their own account or Extra Member access. Netflix explains how a Household works.
Option 1: Invite someone as an Extra Member
An Extra Member is the clearest password-free way to give someone outside your Household access, if your account is eligible. The invited person gets their own account, password, and profile; you manage and pay for the slot. You do not need to disclose your primary Netflix password.
Check eligibility and availability
- Netflix says account owners on Standard or Premium plans can purchase an Extra Member slot in many countries.
- Extra Members cannot be added to ad-supported plans.
- Some accounts billed through a third party or included in a package are excluded. Eligibility and setup can vary by package provider.
- The invited person must activate the Extra Member account in the same country where you created your Netflix account.
Netflix does not publish a universal price or a complete country-by-country availability list in its Extra Member guidance. Check your membership page for the current offer and consult Netflix’s Extra Member eligibility and setup information. If your account is part of a bundle or billed by another provider, check that provider’s instructions too.

Invite an Extra Member
- Sign in to Netflix and open your account or membership settings.
- Look for the Extra Member option. If it is offered, follow the on-screen steps to purchase a slot and invite the person.
- The invitee follows Netflix’s invitation instructions to activate their account, set their own password, and create or use a profile.
Labels and setup steps can differ by country, plan, and billing arrangement. Use the instructions shown in your account rather than assuming the option is available on every subscription.
Option 2: Use a separate account and transfer an eligible profile
If an Extra Member slot is not suitable or available, the other person can open their own Netflix account. Netflix supports transferring an eligible profile to a new or existing account, as well as to an Extra Member slot. Depending on the transfer, the profile can bring over recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and settings. See Netflix’s profile transfer rules and steps.

Not every profile qualifies. For example, Netflix’s stated restrictions include Kids profiles and PIN-protected profiles under the listed conditions. Review the transfer requirements before starting; do not assume that every profile or every saved item will move.
How the two permanent options compare

Why temporary access codes are not a sharing method
If Netflix does not recognize a TV or device as part of the Household, it may offer a temporary access code. Netflix’s localized help instructions say the verification link goes to the account owner and the code expires after 15 minutes. That process is for temporary travel or device verification, not an ongoing way to share an account with someone who lives elsewhere. Instructions can vary by country and device. If you already gave someone your Netflix password
- Change your Netflix password to one that is unique to Netflix.
- Sign out of devices you do not recognize. If you choose to sign out of all devices, your own devices will also be disconnected and must sign in again with the new password.
- Use a password manager if you need help keeping track of a unique password.
