Do not add a username, # symbol, spaces, or punctuation after the ID.
How to copy a user ID on desktop or in a browser
Discord hides developer-related identifiers unless Developer Mode is enabled. If Copy User ID is missing, enable that setting first.
Enable Developer Mode
- Click the gear next to your username to open User Settings.
- In the left sidebar, select Advanced.
- Turn on Developer Mode.
Copy the ID
- Find the person in a server, group chat, or direct message.
- Right-click the user.
- Select Copy User ID.
- Paste the ID after https://discord.com/users/.
You can use the same process for your own account: open your profile card, right-click your avatar or username, and choose Copy User ID when the command is available.
How to copy a user ID on mobile
- Open the user’s profile in Discord.

Desktop or browser
- Click the Discord logo or open the Friends page.
- Click Add Friend.
- Enter the person’s exact username.
- Click Send Friend Request.
Mobile
- Tap the chat-bubble icon.

Do not assume the person’s display name is their username. Display names can be shared by multiple accounts, while the current username is the unique account name.

To change this setting on desktop or in a browser, open User Settings → Data & Privacy → Profile Privacy. Discord provides these choices:
- Friends & All Servers
- Friends & Small Server Only
- Friends Only
The setting saves automatically.

Making your profile private does not stop people from sending friend requests. Discord states that friend requests can still be received even when the profile’s details are hidden. To prevent unwanted contact, review your friend-request and server privacy settings separately.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Sharing a server nickname: A nickname only applies within a particular server and is not a profile link.
- Using the display name: Display names are not unique, so they cannot reliably identify an account.
- Using username#0000: This is outdated as a universal sharing format. New Discord usernames no longer use discriminators.
- Copying the wrong ID: Discord also has server IDs, channel IDs, and message IDs. Make sure you choose Copy User ID.
- Leaving text in the URL: The address should contain only the fixed Discord URL and the numeric ID.
