Connect the ISP equipment’s Ethernet port to your router’s WAN/Internet port, then configure the router’s WAN connection to match your ISP. If the ISP device is also a router, check whether bridge mode or IP passthrough is needed—and follow instructions for its exact model. Your ISP determines the required settings; there is no universal configuration.

Before you connect the router

Find the model number of the ISP-supplied device and determine whether it is a modem only or a combined modem-router gateway. A modem-only device typically hands the internet connection to your router. A gateway also routes traffic, so you may need to enable bridge mode or IP passthrough if you want your own router to handle routing.

Check your ISP’s current instructions or contact support to confirm the required WAN type and whether your account needs credentials, a static IP, VLAN settings, a specific gateway mode, or a particular Ethernet port. Requirements vary by ISP, service type, plan, and hardware. For example, EE says third-party router suitability depends on the plan, and support for non-provider equipment can be limited (EE’s guide to using your own router).

Connect the ISP modem or gateway to your router

  1. If your ISP’s instructions require it, power down the ISP device and your router before connecting them.
  2. Connect an Ethernet cable from the ISP device’s specified Ethernet or LAN port to the owned router’s WAN/Internet port. AT&T’s DSL instructions use the modem’s Ethernet port and the router’s WAN/Internet port (AT&T’s instructions for connecting a non-AT&T router).
  3. If you are enabling passthrough, check whether the ISP gateway requires a designated port. Verizon’s Internet Gateway instructions specify LAN2 for its passthrough setup (Verizon Internet Gateway IP passthrough and bridge mode).
  4. Power the devices back on in the order specified by your ISP or router manufacturer. Connect a phone or computer to your owned router to complete its setup.

Choose the WAN connection type your ISP requires

In the router’s setup interface, choose the WAN or internet connection type specified by your ISP. Router menus commonly distinguish among automatic IP (DHCP or dynamic IP), PPPoE, and static IP. Linksys describes these as internet connection options in its setup guidance (Linksys router internet setup).

WAN type What to enter or expect When to use it
DHCP or dynamic IP The router requests its WAN configuration automatically. Linksys says DHCP obtains an IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS details from the ISP or modem. Use it only if your ISP specifies automatic addressing.
PPPoE Enter the ISP-issued username and password. AT&T’s example is for its DSL service and requires the customer’s DSL network credentials. Use it when your ISP says the connection requires PPPoE; do not assume credentials from one provider apply to another.
Static IP Enter the IP address and other network values supplied for your account. Use it only if your ISP has provided static-IP settings. The details are account-specific.

Do not select a WAN type by trial and error if you can confirm it with your provider. A correct cable connection alone will not work if the router is using the wrong connection type or missing required account settings.

Decide whether to use bridge mode or IP passthrough

If the ISP device is a gateway, it may continue routing even after you connect a second router. If you want your owned router to handle routing, check the gateway’s exact instructions for bridge mode or IP passthrough. Providers use these terms differently, and enabling the feature can change gateway behavior.

Bridge mode

Bridge mode generally changes the gateway’s role so the downstream router can handle routing. The exact behavior depends on the model. TP-Link recommends bridge mode in its specific DSL modem-router plus wireless-router setup to avoid conflicts and double NAT (TP-Link guidance on avoiding double NAT).

IP passthrough

IP passthrough is a provider- and device-specific way to pass the network-assigned address to a connected device. Verizon’s instructions describe a setup using LAN2 and state that gateway Wi-Fi is switched off while passthrough is enabled. NETGEAR’s C7100V instructions describe its bridge/passthrough behavior as disabling NAT so the downstream router receives a WAN IP and handles routing (NETGEAR C7100V passthrough and bridge instructions).

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Follow the guide for your gateway model rather than copying another provider’s port, menu path, or settings. If the ISP does not support bridge mode or passthrough, or you want the gateway to keep routing, ask the ISP and router maker which configuration they support. Two devices both performing routing can result in double NAT, which may affect some network uses.

Check the connection and troubleshoot failures

  1. Open the router’s status or internet page and check whether it reports a WAN connection or has obtained an IP address.
  2. Test internet access on a device connected to the owned router.
  3. If it is offline, verify that the cable runs from the ISP-designated port to the router’s WAN/Internet port, not an ordinary LAN port.
  4. Confirm the WAN type and, for PPPoE or static IP, that the ISP-provided details were entered correctly.
  5. Ask whether your account requires a VLAN, a gateway setting, a provider-side change, or a particular reboot sequence. Do not copy a VLAN ID from another ISP or service.
  6. If setup still fails, contact the ISP and router manufacturer with both device model numbers and the WAN status shown by the router. Support for third-party equipment differs: AT&T’s cited DSL guidance says its technical support covers AT&T routers, a boundary specific to that service guidance (AT&T DSL router guidance).

What to check before choosing a router

  • Confirm that your ISP and plan allow third-party routers and identify any requirements for your access type.
  • Make sure the router has an Ethernet WAN/Internet port and supports the WAN connection type your ISP requires.
  • Check for ISP-specific VLAN or service-bundle requirements, including IPTV or VoIP if applicable.
  • Choose speed, coverage, and features for your home and service; compatibility and required settings matter more than a generic recommendation.
