Set up Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 paddles in the Xbox Accessories app: assign each paddle a button or supported input in a controller profile, save it, then select that profile with the controller’s Profile button. Make a separate profile for each game or control style, and check the game’s own controller settings because a remap is useful only if the game recognizes the assigned input.
What you need before setting up the paddles
- An Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Accessories on an Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows 10/11 PC. Microsoft lists these as the platforms for controller mapping and profile features. Microsoft’s Elite Series 2 product page and Elite Series 2 support cover the controller and its setup features.
- Paddles fitted to the controller. The standard Series 2 package includes four; the Series 2 Core package listing includes the controller and thumbstick adjustment tool but not paddles. Microsoft lists the Complete Component Pack as a separate way to obtain customization components. Check the contents of the exact package you have or plan to buy.
If you need to remove a paddle, Microsoft’s instructions are to rotate it 90 degrees, then pull it straight out. See Microsoft’s Elite Series 2 support page.
How to set up Xbox Elite controller paddles
- Connect and turn on the controller. Open Xbox Accessories on your Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows 10/11 PC.
- Open the mapping editor. In the app, choose Configure, then select a profile to edit or create a new one. Select a paddle in the mapping editor and choose the function to assign. Microsoft describes this flow in its controller setup FAQ.
- Name and save the profile. Use a name that identifies the game or control style, such as “Racing—manual shift.” The Series 2 can store up to three custom profiles as well as its default profile.
- Select the profile and check it in the game. Use the controller’s Profile button to switch among saved profiles. Open the game’s controller options, confirm the intended action, and try it in a low-stakes moment before relying on it in a match or race.
Which paddle assignments work well for common games?
There is no universal paddle layout: choose actions the game supports and that suit the way you play. A useful starting principle is to assign a frequent action that would otherwise make you lift your thumb from a stick. The paddle activates the mapped input, so the game still needs to recognize that input for the intended action.
Shooters and other games with frequent actions
Consider mapping a commonly used action to a paddle if the game lets you bind that action to a button supported by the controller mapping. Which action makes sense depends on the game’s controls and your habits; check its options rather than assuming a particular paddle assignment will work.

Racing games
If a racing game supports manual shifting with the relevant buttons, paddles can be a convenient place to map those inputs. Microsoft itself points to manual shifting in Forza Horizon 5 as an example of tailoring a profile to a game or loadout. That example is not a guarantee that every racing game supports the same mapping.
How to save and switch settings for different games
Create a profile for each distinct control scheme rather than repeatedly changing one layout. For example, you could save one profile for a shooter and another for a racing game. Choose the matching profile with the controller’s Profile button when you change games. Because the Series 2 stores up to three custom profiles plus one default, prioritize the layouts you switch between most often.

Controller-button remapping versus keyboard-key mapping on PC
Mapping one controller button to another is not the same as assigning a keyboard key. Microsoft’s keyboard-mapping guidance warns that keyboard input support varies by game: some games offer full support, some partial support, and some none. It also says keyboard-key mapping over Bluetooth on PC is not supported. Those keyboard-specific caveats should not be treated as a general restriction on ordinary controller-button remapping. Common setup problems to check
- The paddle does nothing in a game: Confirm that the profile is selected and that the game recognizes the mapped input. Check the game’s controller options and try a different supported action if needed.
- The wrong layout is active: Press the controller’s Profile button to switch to the profile you saved for that game or control style.
- Your controller package did not include paddles: Check whether you have the Core package. Its listed contents differ from the standard Series 2 package; Microsoft identifies the Complete Component Pack as a separate customization option.
- You are trying to map keyboard keys over Bluetooth on a PC: Microsoft says that keyboard-key mapping method is not supported over Bluetooth. This applies to keyboard mapping, not automatically to controller-button remapping.
