On iPhone, open Settings > Notifications, scroll down to Government Alerts, and turn on the relevant options shown. On Android, open Settings > Safety and emergency > Wireless emergency alerts; if that path is different, search Settings for “wireless emergency alerts.” These built-in alerts are only one layer: to receive jurisdiction-specific wildfire or evacuation notices, check whether your city or county requires separate enrollment in its official alert system.
Turn on emergency alerts on your phone
Menu names and available alert types vary by country, carrier, phone model, software version, and local authority. Follow the options on your own device rather than assuming every phone has identical controls.
iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Scroll to the bottom and review the options under Government Alerts.
- Turn on the relevant available alert types.
Apple says Government Alerts are on by default on supported devices using a SIM or eSIM from a supported carrier. In some places, certain alerts cannot be turned off, and available categories vary by region. In the United States, an optional Test Emergency Alerts control may also appear; it is off by default and is not required for real emergency alerts. See Apple’s Government, Emergency and Enhanced Safety Alerts guidance.
Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safety and emergency, then Wireless emergency alerts.
- Keep the relevant emergency alert categories enabled and follow any prompts shown on your phone.
On Pixel phones, Google documents the path as Settings > Notifications > Wireless emergency alerts. Common controls include extreme threats, severe threats, AMBER alerts, and public safety messages; state or local test controls may appear depending on region. If you cannot find the menu, search Settings for “wireless emergency alerts.” Some national alerts cannot be disabled in certain countries. Consult Android’s general alert instructions and Google Pixel Help.

Check whether your local authority needs a separate signup
In the United States, Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are issued by authorized government alerting authorities through participating mobile carriers. The National Weather Service says qualifying messages are sent automatically to WEA-capable phones and do not require an app or subscription. They can cover local emergencies that call for evacuation or immediate action, but that does not mean every wildfire update or evacuation notice will arrive as a WEA. Details are available from the National Weather Service.
Also visit the emergency-management website for the city or county where you live, and for any other place where you need alerts. Check whether its official emergency or community notification system requires registration, and follow that agency’s instructions. Local systems differ, so there is no single signup path that applies everywhere. Built-in carrier alerts and local notifications may cover different areas, use different delivery methods, and offer different kinds of messages.

Pay attention to what a local service actually sends. A general fire update or incident map provides information; it is not automatically an official evacuation instruction. For example, CAL FIRE says its firePLANNER is a preparedness checklist, not an incident-alert app, and links to the state incident tracker. It also says its SMS notification resource was not designed as a real-time emergency alert platform and directs people to local law enforcement for evacuation information. See the CAL FIRE firePLANNER FAQ.
If you are in the UK
The UK system is separate from U.S. WEA. GOV.UK says mobile emergency alerts are broadcast from nearby masts to compatible devices over 4G or 5G; they do not require an app or signup. Compatibility conditions apply, and a device may not receive an alert in some circumstances. Check GOV.UK’s explanation of how emergency alerts work for the UK-specific details.

The USB Output (5V/1A) supports emergency phone charging when grid power is unavailable. Ideal for hurricanes, winter storms, camping, RV travel, home emergencies, emergency kits, survival gear, and disaster supplies. Realistic Charging Expectations: The 10000mAh rating refers to the internal battery cell; actual output varies due to conversion loss and device efficiency. Expect approximately 1–1.5 charges for an iPhone 14.

Multiple charging methods keep your emergency radio ready for blackouts, storms, remote travel, and off-grid situations.
Make alerts useful when a wildfire threatens
- Check settings before fire season. Confirm that the relevant built-in alert categories are enabled and find out whether your local authority has a separate notification system.
- Keep your phone powered and charged. Alerts depend on a compatible, powered-on device and supported network or service; they are not guaranteed advance notice.
- Use more than one source. CAL FIRE advises monitoring CAL FIRE and local authorities and keeping a charged cellphone. If power is out, it suggests a battery-powered radio or cellphone for updates. See the CAL FIRE Go Evacuation Guide.
- Follow official evacuation instructions promptly. Use local authorities for current orders and routes rather than relying on an incident map or general update as an order.
