On a compatible Android phone using Phone by Google, open Phone > More options > Settings > Voicemail and turn on Visual voicemail. If the option is missing or setup does not complete, your carrier, plan, region, or carrier voicemail app may determine which inbox you can use; a phone setting alone cannot activate a service the carrier has not provisioned.
Set up visual voicemail in Phone by Google
Menu names and availability can vary by phone, Android version, and dialer app. On phones that use Phone by Google, follow these steps:
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then tap Settings.
- Tap Voicemail.
- Turn on Visual voicemail.
- When the Voicemail tab appears at the bottom of the app, open it to view messages.
If the tab does not appear, Google advises calling voicemail instead. You can also check Phone > More options > Settings > Voicemail > Advanced Settings > Service and confirm that Your carrier is selected. The feature is not available on every carrier or in every country or region; Google’s Phone app support list includes AT&T, Cellcom, Coriolis, Google Fi, O2, Orange, and T-Mobile. Being on a listed carrier does not guarantee eligibility for every plan, device, or region. Google Phone app Help
Set it up for multiple SIMs
Visual voicemail settings may be separate for each SIM, and multi-SIM support depends on the phone and carrier.

- Open Phone > More options > Settings > Voicemail.
- Select a SIM and turn on Visual voicemail.
- Return to the SIM selection and repeat for another line, if the option is supported.
If you change which SIM is used for mobile data, check the voicemail setting again; Google notes that you may need to re-enable it. Google Phone app Help
Choose the right voicemail inbox
Android visual voicemail relies on carrier service and configuration, so the built-in Phone app toggle cannot create support on its own. Android’s platform documentation describes the carrier providing a compatible voicemail server and configuration; a carrier voicemail app can also disable the built-in client. AT&T example: carrier-provided setup
AT&T requires a compatible phone on an AT&T Wireless or AT&T Prepaid voice and data plan that includes visual voicemail, along with a connection to AT&T’s wireless network. For Samsung phones, AT&T directs customers to open the Visual Voicemail app and follow its prompts to set a password and greeting. On compatible Android phones without built-in visual voicemail, it directs customers to use the AT&T Visual Voicemail app. AT&T says voicemail must be set up within 60 days of activation. These requirements apply to AT&T, not Android phones universally. AT&T Visual Voicemail support
AT&T states that its Visual Voicemail service stores up to 40 messages for 30 days; that limit is specific to AT&T’s service, according to its page last updated in 2025. AT&T Visual Voicemail support

Troubleshoot setup and missing messages
The Visual voicemail option is missing
- Confirm with your carrier that visual voicemail is available in your country or region and included with your plan.
- Ask whether the service is provisioned for your specific line and phone. Carrier configuration is part of activation.
- Check whether your carrier expects you to use its voicemail app instead; that app can disable the Phone app’s visual voicemail feature. Google Phone app Help Android Open Source Project
The Voicemail tab is missing
Google advises calling voicemail when the tab is unavailable. In the Phone app, also check Voicemail > Advanced Settings > Service and confirm Your carrier is selected. Google Phone app Help
Notifications stopped or messages are unreadable after changing phones
Google warns that switching from a phone that displayed messages in the Phone app to one that does not may lead to missing voicemail notifications or unreadable carrier text messages. Check the voicemail service setting and contact your provider to confirm which inbox and configuration your line should use. Google Phone app Help

Voicemail transcription is unavailable
Transcription depends on supported providers or devices, and Google says to turn on visual voicemail first when transcription is supported. Google’s help page lists English and Spanish transcription on Android 8.0 and later, with availability varying by carrier, device, and region. Google Phone app Help
Samsung Direct voicemail is missing
Check that the Galaxy phone runs Android 16 and One UI 8.5 or higher. Samsung notes that availability and features vary by model, software version, and carrier. Samsung Support
