Before you start: use a trusted app and the right mobile number
Choose your bank’s official app or another official UPI-enabled app supported by your bank. For example, NPCI describes BHIM as supporting account linking, UPI payments, and transaction help; that is not a comparative endorsement of apps. Download an app from a source identified by your bank or the app provider, not from a link in an unsolicited message or call.
Put in the phone the SIM associated with the mobile number registered with your bank. UPI account discovery relies on that number; if it does not match the bank’s records, the app may not find your account. See the NPCI UPI FAQ for setup guidance. Screens and verification options vary by app and bank.
Set up UPI and create your PIN
- Open the official app. Start its UPI registration or setup flow and complete the verification it requests. Do not follow instructions from an unsolicited caller or install an app they recommend.
- Find and link your bank account. Select the account you intend to use. If it does not appear, first check that the phone has the mobile number registered with that bank; consult your bank through its official app or website if the number is correct but discovery still fails.
- Set or reset the UPI PIN using the app’s supported process. NPCI’s FAQ describes debit-card details for PIN setup or reset, but available methods can differ by bank and supported authentication options. Enter details only in the official app’s flow, and never disclose your PIN or one-time password (OTP) to another person.
- Review the account and payment details before using UPI. If you choose to make a first payment, treat it as an ordinary payment—not a security test—and verify the recipient and amount on the app screen before authorizing it.
Know what a UPI PIN does
A UPI PIN is a four-to-six-digit authorization code. Entering it authorizes a payment, so regard any PIN prompt as a request to approve money going out—not as a step for receiving money. Never share it, even with someone claiming to be bank, app, or customer support. Keep OTPs, passwords, and other account credentials private as well.

NPCI clarified in a 13 January 2025 press release that opening a UPI or bank app alone does not approve a transaction: the user must navigate to a payment request, choose the pay option, and authorize it with a UPI PIN. That safeguard does not make social-engineering scams harmless; a user can still be tricked into approving a payment.
Recognize common payment scams
- Unexpected “receive money” requests: You do not enter a UPI PIN to receive money. If a request, reward, or refund process asks for your PIN, stop and inspect what the app says you are authorizing.
- QR codes presented as a way to collect money: Scanning a QR code and entering a PIN is for making a payment, not receiving one. Before authorizing, check the payee and amount displayed inside the app. Do not rely on what a caller or message says the QR code will do.
- Cashback links and unsolicited messages: NPCI flags fake cashback links, QR codes, unknown apps, and messages as fraud patterns. Do not follow unfamiliar payment links or install an app at a stranger’s direction.
- Remote-access requests or urgent support calls: Do not give a caller control of your phone or account credentials. Find support details independently on your bank’s official site or app.
- SIM-swap and malicious-app risks: The Reserve Bank of India warns about fraud involving disclosure of critical payment information, SIM swaps, links in messages or email, and spurious apps that access device information. Use official app sources and contact your bank promptly if you suspect your number or account has been compromised.

Optional biometric authentication: availability varies
An NPCI circular dated 7 October 2025 described optional on-device biometric transaction authentication as an alternative to a UPI PIN, initially for transactions up to ₹5,000. NPCI required apps and payment service provider banks to validate compatibility and security, including checks related to rooted or jailbroken devices and supported operating systems. This is app-dependent, not a universal option. Follow only the feature and instructions presented by your official app; if it is not offered, use the supported PIN flow.

If your phone is lost
Contact your bank promptly and block the mobile number or SIM associated with UPI. Use a support number or contact route found independently on the bank’s official website or app, not one supplied by an unsolicited caller or message. NPCI’s UPI FAQ also covers lost-phone steps.

If a payment is pending, failed, or disputed
Open transaction history in the UPI app and check the transaction’s status. If money was debited without a successful confirmation, raise a complaint through the participating app or your bank’s official channel. NPCI also provides a complaint registration and status facility, and the BHIM product page describes transaction-history issue reporting for BHIM users.
Do not assume every reversal will arrive immediately. NPCI’s FAQ describes real-time reversals for declined transactions but notes that some reversals can take longer; follow the status and support instructions provided by your bank or app.
