You can install and activate Unexpected Keyboard on Android, adjust its height, and create a custom layout that brings frequently used keys closer to your thumb. The app’s reviewed documentation does not describe a dedicated one-handed mode or a left- or right-side docking switch, so these adjustments are workarounds rather than a built-in one-handed setting.
Install and activate Unexpected Keyboard

Install Unexpected Keyboard from Google Play or find it on F-Droid. The Google Play listing identifies Juloo as the developer and reported an update on September 6, 2026. F-Droid lists version 2.1.0 (56), added September 9, 2026, for ARM 64-bit, ARM 32-bit, x86, and x86_64 devices running Android 5.0 or newer. These are dates and details from the respective listings, not a single universal release date.

Open Android Settings and find the on-screen or virtual keyboard controls. Enable Unexpected Keyboard, then select it as the active keyboard if Android prompts you to choose an input method. The exact menu names and route vary by Android version and device manufacturer; if the path differs, search Settings for “keyboard.”

Open any app with a text field. If another keyboard appears, use your device’s input-method picker to switch to Unexpected Keyboard. The picker’s location and appearance depend on the Android device.

Learn the swipe-based keys
Unexpected Keyboard places additional symbols or actions at the corners of keys. Swipe from a key toward the corner bearing the character or action you want. The project README describes the central interaction this way: “The main feature is that you can type more characters by swiping the keys towards the corners.” Unexpected Keyboard project README.
To open the keyboard’s settings, swipe down-left from the gear key. The direction matters: use the gear key’s down-left swipe rather than looking for a separate one-handed control in Android settings.

Adjust the keyboard for a more comfortable reach
Try changing the keyboard height
From the keyboard, swipe down-left from the gear key to open settings, then look for the keyboard-height or sizing controls. The project’s custom-layout guide documents options for keyboard height and row or key sizing: Custom layout guide.
A height adjustment changes the keyboard’s size and footprint; it does not dock the keyboard to one side. Try a small adjustment and check whether the keys are easier to reach without covering too much of the screen.

Consider a custom layout for frequent keys

Open Unexpected Keyboard settings from the keyboard using the down-left gear swipe.

Tap an existing layout or choose “Add an alternate layout,” then select “Custom layout” at the bottom of the menu.

Use the documented custom XML options to change key positions and widths. As an experiment, place letters or actions you use often nearer the area your thumb reaches comfortably. The guide explains how to define the layout; it does not provide a validated one-handed preset or guarantee an ergonomic result.

Keep a copy of your custom layout XML outside the app. The project guide warns that edits stored only inside the app may be lost when switching to a build signed differently.

Android’s system One-handed mode is separate from Unexpected Keyboard’s settings. Google lists it among device accessibility and navigation features, but its documentation does not say that it rearranges this keyboard. Behavior can vary by device, so do not assume that enabling the system feature will create a side-docked Unexpected Keyboard layout. Google’s Android accessibility guide.
