You can get commute-related traffic information through Pixel’s personalized At a Glance notifications, Waze’s configurable road-report alerts, or Apple Maps’ traffic and incident display. They are not equivalent: the documented proactive commute-notification setup here is Pixel-specific, Waze alerts focus on selected reports, and Apple’s cited instructions explain how to view conditions rather than how to schedule commute-delay push notifications.
Set up personalized commute notifications on a Pixel
Pixel’s At a Glance commute notifications use your saved home and work locations to provide personalized commute information. Google says it may take 2–3 weeks after initial setup for commute info to appear.
- On your Pixel, open Settings > Modes > Transit > App Settings.
- Tap Set up commute notifications and follow the prompts.
- Save your home and work locations, confirm the requested location settings, and build your commute profile.
You can also start setup in the My Pixel app under Tips > Everyday Tools. Google’s Pixel guidance says background location access, precise location, Timeline (Location History), and Web & App Activity can support timely personalized information. You can change these settings later. Check that Commute is enabled in At a Glance customization, that notifications are allowed, and that your saved addresses are correct if information is missing or inaccurate. Review Timeline as well if the suggested route or timing seems wrong. These instructions are Pixel-specific; they do not establish the same settings or menu path for all Android phones. Configure traffic and incident alerts in Waze
Waze lets you choose report categories and, where offered, whether an alert appears on the map or while driving. To configure them:
#1 Best Overall
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
- Open Waze and tap the menu.
- Go to Settings > Alerts and reports > Reports.
- Select a report type, such as Traffic, Crash, Hazards, Bad weather, Blocked lane, Construction, or Closures.
- Choose Show on map and/or Alert while driving where those controls are available.
Available preferences can vary by report type and location. Waze limits and prioritizes the alerts shown on a route, so it may not call out every relevant report. Treat it as a configurable source of road information, not a guarantee that every commute delay will trigger an advance notification. If you use Waze with Android Auto or CarPlay, disconnect the phone before changing alert preferences; Waze says the changes apply when you use the app in the car. Waze Help: Set alerts for reports.
View traffic and incidents in Apple Maps
On iPhone, Apple Maps can show traffic conditions and incident reports. Yellow indicates slowdowns; red indicates stop-and-go traffic. Tap an incident marker to inspect it. Apple evaluates incoming incident reports and displays markers when confidence is high. The cited Apple guide explains viewing traffic and incidents, not setting up recurring push notifications for commute delays; feature availability also varies by country and region. Choose the option that matches the alert you want
| Option | What it provides | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel At a Glance | Personalized commute information based on saved home and work locations. | The documented setup is Pixel-specific; it may take 2–3 weeks for commute info to appear after setup. |
| Waze | Selected road-report alerts, with map and driving-alert controls where offered. | Report options vary, and Waze limits and prioritizes route alerts. |
| Apple Maps | Traffic colors and incident markers for checking current conditions. | The cited instructions do not establish recurring commute-delay push notifications. |
Availability and behavior depend on the device, app, region, and settings. If you want information without manually checking a map, Pixel’s documented commute workflow is the most directly personalized option among these instructions. For reports about hazards and incidents on a drive, configure Waze categories. For a visual check of traffic and reported incidents, use Apple Maps’ traffic view.
Troubleshoot missing or inaccurate alerts
- Check saved locations or route: For Pixel, confirm home and work addresses; review them and Timeline if commute details look wrong.
- Check notifications: Make sure the relevant app’s notifications have not been blocked in device settings.
- Check location access: Pixel commute information depends on location-related settings; verify background and precise location access and the relevant account activity settings.
- Check selected categories: In Waze, verify the report types and map or driving-alert options you chose.
- Consider timing and local availability: Pixel commute information can take 2–3 weeks to appear after setup, and features or report options may not be available in every region.
Do not assume an alert will arrive a particular number of minutes before departure or before a delay: the cited instructions do not promise a universal lead time across these services.

Why old Google Maps alert announcements may not apply
Google’s October 1, 2018 announcement described Android notifications about delays and disruptions on a route as they happened. It also cited commute delays in 25 North American cities during rush hour that could be up to 60 percent longer than expected when a drive began. That is a dated, geographically limited company statement, not a current universal statistic or proof that the same notification feature is available to every Google Maps user today.
