Before your first shoot, charge the Pocket 3, insert a compatible microSD card, activate it in DJI Mimo, check for firmware updates, and make a short test recording. The camera has no built-in storage, so the card is essential—not an optional upgrade.
1. Charge the Pocket 3 before you leave
Charge the camera over USB-C with a compatible USB-C PD charger. DJI reports that in its laboratory test, a separately sold DJI 65W PD charger brought the camera to 80% in approximately 16 minutes and to full charge in around 32 minutes. Those are DJI’s test results for that charger, not guaranteed charging times with other chargers or conditions. DJI’s beginner guide and support materials provide the charging guidance.
2. Insert a microSD card
The Pocket 3 has no internal storage and requires a microSD card to save footage. DJI recommends at least a UHS-I Speed Grade 3 card and lists compatible models; its support specifications state that the camera supports cards up to 1 TB. Check DJI’s current Osmo Pocket 3 specifications for its recommended card list before buying or using a card.
3. Activate the camera with DJI Mimo
First-use activation is required. Have your phone connected and its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled, then:

- Power on the Osmo Pocket 3.
- Open DJI Mimo and tap the camera icon to connect.
- Follow the prompts in the app to complete activation.

4. Check for a firmware update
With the camera connected through DJI Mimo, follow any update prompt shown in the app. DJI’s beginner guide advises that the battery be above 15% before updating and estimates an update at about two minutes. These are DJI’s guidance and estimate; follow the current prompts on your device if they differ. Do not start an update when you may need the camera immediately.

5. Choose a gimbal mode and check your framing
The Pocket 3 provides three gimbal modes. Pick based on how you want the camera to respond, then make a short movement and framing check before an important take.
- Follow: the camera follows your movement while keeping its orientation controlled.
- Tilt Locked: the camera holds its tilt angle rather than following changes in tilt.
- FPV: the gimbal follows movement across its axes for a more responsive, dynamic feel.
DJI’s Pocket 3 tutorials cover the camera’s controls and modes. No single mode suits every shot: a moving walk-through and a deliberately steady, level composition may call for different behavior.

6. Record a test clip and confirm the transfer path
Use the shutter/record control to start and stop a short clip. Play it back on the camera to confirm that the framing and sound are usable before you begin a longer shoot. DJI documents three ways to move footage off the camera:
- To a phone: export through DJI Mimo.
- To a computer: connect by USB-C.
- By card: remove the microSD card and transfer its files with a card reader.
For optional interview or direct-to-camera audio, DJI publishes a Pocket 3 tutorial for connecting DJI Mic 2. A case, handle, or mini tripod is also optional; check that any accessory is specifically compatible with the Pocket 3.

- Camera charged and microSD card inserted.
- DJI Mimo activation complete; phone Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled for the connection.
- Firmware prompt checked and update completed if appropriate.
- Gimbal mode and framing checked with a short movement.
- Test clip recorded and playback confirmed.
